Ukraine crisis: Ceasefire with rebels holds

A ceasefire agreed by the Ukrainian government and pro-Russia rebels in the east appears to be holding. There were no reports of fighting overnight, after the deal was struck in Minsk in Belarus on Friday.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko says there should now be talks about a long-term solution to the conflict, which has killed about 2,600 people. However, the rebels said the ceasefire had not changed their policy of wanting to separate from Ukraine.

The BBC's Richard Galpin in Donetsk says that overnight he had not heard any of the heavy artillery barrages that took place before the truce. The BBC's Fergal Keane tweeted from Mariupol, further south, that the ceasefire was holding there.

Ukraine's National Guard Commander Stepan Poltorak told the Interfax news agency: "As of this morning there haven't been any violations."

Putin backers, protesters put their case

THE most controversial leader at the G20 summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been branded a killer and praised as a ruler of steel, all in the same day

THE president is having a tense time at the Brisbane summit, as Western leaders threaten Russia with new sanctions over the shooting down of flight MH17 and deplore Russian-backed military aggression in eastern Ukraine. They also accuse Mr Putin of bullying over Russian military flights in Japanese airspace over disputed islands and of naval posturing by sending warships to the South Pacific. But Brisbane's small Cossack community begged to differ with international opinion by staging a 30-person march in support of the president, and calling for an end to democracy in Russia.

"We just need a steel ruler and we encourage Putin," Cossack leader Simeon Boikov said. "We don't need Russian democracy - this was an American flag that was brought in to bring pornography, drugs and immorality to the people under the guise of freedom. We want Russia to become an empire." Mr Boikov mocked every other world leader at G20, including Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who had threatened to shirt-front Mr Putin over the MH17 atrocity. "You know what they compare it to? A fly annoying a bull and the bull just waves his tail and the fly goes away," he said. "You can guess who's the fly and who is the bull."

But elsewhere in Brisbane, 200 Ukrainian Australians gathered to call the Russian leader a "sly killer". Young protesters, wearing headbands proclaiming "Putin, killer", laid down on a large Ukrainian flag near the G20 summit venue, claiming Mr Putin had the blood of their compatriots and MH17 passengers on his hands. Their bodies were draped with the flags of the nations that lost citizens when the Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down in July, killing 298 people, including 38 Australian citizens and residents. They also demanded the president answer for the deaths of Ukrainians killed as a result of his support for pro-Russian separatists.

The protesters, some wearing national dress and holding signs proclaiming, "Putin is a sly killer", chanted in Ukrainian "glory to Ukraine, glory to the heroes". Stefan Romaniw, president of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), said the Russian leader should "get on his bike and go". "You are not part of the international community", he shouted, urging G20 leaders to impose more sanctions on Russia. "Mr Putin, you do not have a seat at that table, but unfortunately some of the members of the G20 insisted."

AFUO spokesman Peter Schmiggle said the Russian government probably funded the earlier Cossack demonstration. "One of the great things about Australia is that people with all points of view get to make their views known in a democratic society, but that's the kind of society Putin objects to," he told AAP. "I say to the people who are pro-Putin, `who are your backers? Are you paid by the Russian government? Where do get your money?'"

Both protests were peaceful and no one was arrested.

Ukraine crisis: Russia under pressure at G20 summit

Vladimir Putin is facing a hostile reception from some Western leaders

Russia has been rebuked by Western leaders about its role in the Ukraine crisis, at a G20 summit in Australia. Canadian PM Stephen Harper told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia needed to "get out of Ukraine". US President Barack Obama said Moscow's "aggression" in Ukraine was a "threat to the world", while Britain threatened more sanctions unless Russia stopped "destabilising" its neighbour.

The two-day summit in Brisbane is focusing on promoting economic growth. World leaders are expected to expand on plans agreed by G20 finance ministers in February to boost global growth by 2% in five years. However Saturday - the first of the two-day summit - was dominated by Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists have been fighting government forces in eastern regions.

Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Russia of sending military forces across the border, something the Kremlin denies. The EU imposed sanctions when Russia annexed Crimea in March and has added further measures since. Before the G20 summit began, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said there would "have to be a very different relationship" between Europe and Russia if "we continue to see Russian troops" inside Ukraine, adding that there was "the potential for further sanctions". Mr Cameron later held a private meeting with Mr Putin. The two discussed "rebuilding relations", Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The Russian president faced a frosty reception from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "I'll shake your hand, but I only have one thing to say to you: you need to get out of Ukraine," Mr Harper told him, the Canadian leader's spokesman said.

President Obama said the US was at the forefront of "opposing Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which is a threat to the world".

Russian officials said Mr Putin was planning to leave the summit on Sunday ahead of schedule, but gave no reasons for the move. Meeting on the margins of the summit on Saturday, Mr Putin urged his French counterpart Francois Hollande to join him to defuse tensions between the two countries over Ukraine. France has withheld the delivery of two warships to the Russian navy over its actions in Ukraine.

Opening the summit, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he wanted to use the event to reassure people about the direction of the world's economy, with a "message of hope and optimism". He said job creation, identifying tax cheats and strengthening the global economy would all be discussed. His government had tried to keep climate change off the agenda, despite calls from campaigners.

Were MH17 'satellite images' photoshopped? Report slams new surveillance pictures released by Russian state broadcaster as a 'shoddy fake'

** Images of a fighter jet shooting down flight MH17 have been labelled 'fakes'
Investigative journalism site, Bellingcat, says there are several inconsistencies with the images reported by Russian TV

** It claims the images have shown the wrong airline logo, they did not depict a Boeing 777 and the type of fighter jet reported was also wrong

** 'Leaked' satellite images showed a missile streaking towards the MH17 flight, claiming it was shot down by a Ukranian war plane

** The Russian Kremlin-owned channel, who released the images, suggested a State crime was committed

I've merged two threads because they are basically covering the same material, one was on Ukraine and the other on Putin & Russia as applied to Ukraine.

QUOTES from people who know a lot more than me ...

The daily mail can't even make their minds up what they are trying to debunk. Read the bit that is supposed to show the "wrong fighter jet". The outline comparison is to a Sukhoi SU-25 'frogfoot'.

Posted Image

That is a close support ground attack aircraft (think similar to the American A-10 warthog. It isn't a fighter and if I remember rightly, doesn't have the operating ceiling to match a commercial liner.

Of course it is a different shape to the satellite image because they claimed it was a Mig-29 'fulcrum'. They even confirm that further down the bloody page!

Here is a mig 29 for comparison:

They aren't even remotely similar aircraft. Completely different roles, even different manufacturers.

Have to agree there Cheesy, the SU25 would never reach 33,000 feet and even if unarmed could never reach that height, it is a ground attack aircraft, the Mig29 on the other hand could do the job, but both aircraft have limited early warning systems and with the Ukrainians having lost two aircraft just prior to the attack and knowing full well the existence of BUK systems in Eastern Ukraine are unlikely to have been responsible.

They seem to have edited the page now. The Mail have a brilliant habit of doing that. They put out a story and wait for the comments to act as a live copy editor. Incredibly shoddy journalism.

They are showing a picture of a letter now. Supposedly it was a typical fighter attack from the rear (not really a major concern in air to air combat since the 60s) in which they precisely shot the flight crew in the abdomen (difficult to do from the rear...).

What a massive pile of c**p.

Ukraine and rebels trade prisoners in Donetsk

Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine have exchanged scores of prisoners with the Ukrainian government near the rebel-held city of Donetsk.

The deal was to swap 150 Ukrainian soldiers for 225 militants - the biggest exchange so far.

Ukraine later said 146 of its soldiers had been freed for 222 militants. The remaining releases are due on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ukraine froze vital bus and rail links with Crimea, its southern peninsula annexed by Russia in March.

In another move, the world's two largest credit and debit card companies, Visa and Mastercard, said on Friday they could no longer support bank cards being used in Crimea, following fresh US sanctions imposed this month.

The moves come ahead of the traditional holiday season in the region, when people travel to be with their families for New Year.

Inconclusive talks were held this week in Minsk, Belarus, on ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has claimed 4,700 lives.

Although fighting has lessened considerably, the conflict continues and more than 1,300 people have died since a truce was announced in September, the BBC's David Stern reports from Kiev.

Kiev accuses Moscow of actively supporting the militants with Russian soldiers and heavy artillery. The Kremlin denies this but says its regular forces are fighting in eastern Ukraine as volunteers.
