This is getting serious now. I think we should all brace ourselves because we're currently looking down the barrel of a gun.

I'd feel a lot more confident about this countries position in all this if we didn't have silly Billy Hague in the driving seat.

Russia's Putin visits annexed Crimea

President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Crimea, his first visit to the peninsula since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in March.

He addressed sailors in Sevastopol harbour as part of celebrations marking the 1945 Soviet victory over the Nazis.

The Kiev government protested at the visit, calling it a "gross violation of Ukraine's sovereignty".

Meanwhile, reports say several people died in a shoot-out between Ukrainian troops and separatists in Mariupol.

Kiev recently launched an operation to retake official buildings occupied by pro-Russia rebels in Mariupol and several other cities in Ukraine's east and south.

In the chaos that followed the ousting of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February this year, Russian forces took over most of the peninsula. Crimeans then held a referendum and voted to join Russia, though the vote was widely criticised as offering no real choice.

Pro-Russian separatists in south and eastern Ukrainian cities have now said they will hold secession referendums on Sunday.

Activists remain in control of many official buildings across the south and east despite a military operation by Kiev to remove them. Dozens of people have been killed in the unrest.

Ukraine unrest: Dozens die as Donetsk airport 'retaken'

Ukraine's interior ministry says the military is now in full control of the airport in the eastern city of Donetsk after a day of bloody clashes. At least 30 pro-Russia separatists have been killed, the insurgents say. Kiev said the army suffered no casualties.

Armed separatists had tried to take over the airport early on Monday. Ukraine's new President Petro Poroshenko then vowed to tackle "terrorists" in the east "within hours, not months".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday again called on Mr Poroshenko to stop military operations in eastern Ukraine immediately and implement a roadmap for peace negotiated in Geneva on 17 April. Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, he said a "real war" was under way in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The regions declared independence after Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in the wake of the removal of Ukraine's pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych. He said operations were still continuing, and a BBC team heard sporadic gunfire on Tuesday.

A representative of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic told the BBC that reports of at least 30 dead in Monday's fighting were accurate. Other reports of the death toll vary. Donetsk mayor Alexander Lukyanchenko said 40 people had been killed in the past day, while another separatist spokesman said 50 fighters had died.

Monday's clashes started after separatist militants stormed the Sergei Prokofiev Donetsk airport in the early hours. The Ukrainian military responded quickly with air strikes and an assault by heavily armed troops. The attempt to seize the airport may have been intended to prevent Mr Poroshenko from travelling there after he said his first trip would be to visit the restive east. Mr Poroshenko, a 48-year-old billionaire and former foreign minister, was on Monday formally declared the winner of Sunday's presidential election with 54% of the vote. He vowed east Ukraine would not be "turned into Somalia", adding: "The anti-terrorist operation cannot and should not last two or three months. It should and will last hours." However, Mr Poroshenko has also said he wants to talk to Russia to end the crisis.

Moscow says it will accept the election results and engage in dialogue with Mr Poroshenko. But Mr Lavrov said: "The question of a visit to Russia by Poroshenko is not being considered and is not being discussed through diplomatic or any other channels."

The insurgency developed after Mr Yanukovych fled Kiev amid bloody street protests and calls for closer ties with the EU. At least two civilians were killed in Donetsk city and the separatist stronghold of Sloviansk on Monday. The body of a woman, reportedly killed by a stray bullet, lay near the railway in station Donetsk. In Sloviansk, the bloodied body of another woman lay near an apartment block. At least one man was also wounded.

Ukraine crisis: Donetsk rebels in mass withdrawal

Ukrainian separatist rebels have pulled back to the main city of Donetsk, abandoning several strongholds in the Donetsk region to government forces.

The pro-Russian gunmen abandoned the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, as well as some smaller towns, in the north of Donetsk region.

But they have vowed to continue the fight from Donetsk city, describing the withdrawal as a tactical retreat.

Ukrainian forces launched an offensive this week after a truce broke down.

The BBC's David Stern in Kiev says the military's capture of Sloviansk, where the eastern insurgency began in April, is a major victory for the government.

The government said in a statement that the rebels had fled after mortar shelling from government forces.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said the breakthrough was "the beginning of the turning point in the fight against militants".

"This is not complete victory. But the cleansing of Sloviansk from gangs who are armed to the teeth is of huge symbolic importance," he said in a statement.

Ukraine military plane shot down as fighting rages

A Ukrainian military transport aircraft has been shot down in the east, amid fighting with separatist rebels, Ukrainian officials say. The An-26 plane was hit at an altitude of 6,500m (21,325ft), a statement on the presidential website said. It said the plane had been targeted with "a more powerful missile weapon" than a shoulder-carried missile, probably fired from Russia.

Russia has not commented on the claim. The crew survived. It was not immediately known if there were any other people on board the aircraft. Rebel forces earlier said they had targeted the aircraft.

Malaysia airliner crashes in east Ukraine near Russia border

A Malaysian airliner reportedly with 295 people on board has crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Airlines said it had lost contact with Flight MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukraine, it said in a tweet.

An aviation source in Moscow told Reuters the plane had been found burning on the ground in east Ukraine.

Separatist rebels have been fighting government forces in the region. A number of Ukrainian military planes have been shot down by missiles in recent weeks. Ukraine has accused Russia's military of supplying advanced missiles to the rebels. Earlier on Thursday, Ukrainian officials blamed the Russian air force for shooting down one of its ground attack jets on Wednesday.

Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying the plane had been hit by a missile at an altitude of 10,000m (33,000ft). The claim could not be verified independently.

The source which spoke to Reuters about burning wreckage on the ground said the plane had failed to enter Russian airspace. The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports of the crash and was "urgently working to establish what has happened".

Analysis: Jonathan Beale, BBC News

A defence expert has told the BBC that shooting down a plane at 10,000m (9.7 miles) would have required a long- range surface-to-air missile - possibly guided by radar.

That suggests it is unlikely it could have been downed by a portable air defence missile, or Manpad, which has a much shorter range.

The only other possibility is for an aircraft at that height to be downed by a fighter carrying air-to-air missiles.

The US will have access to satellite imagery that should be able to identify ultra-violet plumes if a long-range surface-to-air missile was fired.

Unlike Malaysia Air Flight 370, where no intel satellites were watching the area the aircraft likely went down, it's very likely that recon satellites were watching Ukraine. Whether any nation will confirm an missile launch and give away some idea of their coverage is not clear, but I think it's likely that they will if the evidence is clear enough and/or if several nations (US & UK, most likely) can both confirm the launch.

If there was a launch, whether from Russian territory or (more likely) pro-Russian Ukrainian territory, this will look very, very bad for Russia. It's hard to see a launch from Russia or Ukraine proper, as this is a scheduled flight that both nations would be familiar with. An 'informal' pro-Russian group with a fancy new missile is another matter...

BBC Live coverage:

17:32: The BBC's Oleg Boldyrev in Moscow says the rebels do not have out-dated equipment. What they have equals or maybe surpasses the Ukrainian government's capabilities. He says some reports say the rebels even have fighter planes reportedly flown from Crimea and that possibility should not be excluded.
