Chuka Umunna withdraws Labour leader bid.

"Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna withdraws from the Labour leadership race, citing the level of pressure and scrutiny that comes with being a candidate."

Good job really. Doesn't show an awful lot of forward planning or understanding required of a leader. It's only been 3 days since he threw his hat into the ring.

You've got to wonder what the real reason is though.
Perhaps the word "Scrutiny" had something to do with his decision !!!!!
Apparently the press were knocking on doors of his family members having found out their addresses. This included his 102 year old grandmother. Nothing has been learnt from the hacking scandal and thanks to Cameron' s cowardly behaviour the press will remain unregulated.
I don't think there is any scandal here. Frankly I don't blame him. His family should not have their lives invaded like this.
Somehow I knew it would end being the fault of the conservatives. ^o)
I wonder what you would feel if 90% of the press constantly vilified the Tory party. Don't you think the press should be regulated after hacking a dead girls mobile? Or do you think they should be allowed to get away with whatever they want to do to get a scoop?
For a lot of the reasons you identify, I don't read the papers (who does these days?), but most of them switch their allegiance to whoever they think stands the best chance of winning.

I don't think that phone hacking was the domain of purely right leaning papers and I don't get how Cameron is responsible for phone hacking either.

Anyway, I watch the entirely balanced views of the BBC. Or are they biased towards the conservatives as well? I'd heard it was the other way around.
Cameron has refused to back the Leveson enquiries proposals for press regulation. Why do you think that is? Why do you think Murdoch's papers tried to destroy Miliband? I'm sure Miliband's desire for press regulation had nothing to do with it!!!!!
It was refreshing to see Miliband not being in Murdoch's back pocket. In fairness to John Major he was the last leading politician prior to Miliband who wasn't owned by the press.

Its also laughable that the BBC is in any way left wing. It is very much part of the establishment and fawns over the Royal family whilst being biased towards keeping the Union in place.
Most of the comments I see about the BBC being biased are about them being biased against the conservatives rather than anything else.

As far as Murdoch is concerned, he has been known to throw his support behind another political colour in the past. Like I said, the press goes with whoever they think will win.

Blaming Cameron for being solely responsible for Umunna's withdrawal is a stretch in my view.

Hang on. Where have I said Cameron is 'solely responsible' for Umunna's withdrawal from the Labour leadership race? Happy to debate with you but please don't try and spin what I say.

As for the press it has always shown a strong bias to the Tories with the Express,Mail,Telegraph,Financial Times,Evening Standard and The Times right wing. Only the Mirror and to a lesser extent the Guardian left wing. The Sun apart from the Blair years has been Tory too.

I think you are overstating the influence the press really have though. And with newspapers becoming less and less in circulation the influence reduces every day.

Hate when people say Conservatives only won because they have the Sun favouring them. There are less readers of the Sun than the difference between Conservative and Labour votes. And I bet a large portion of the Sun readers didn't vote, and didn't vote Conservative.

Newspapers follow public opinion, they don't create it.

The Sun doesn't always back the winner either:

There's going to be a Scottish Labour leadership election as well now. Jim Murphy's walked.
So he's gone has he? Not that it will make much difference, Labour could elect the Archangel Gabriel as their leader in Scotland, but it still wouldn't be enough to beat the SNP !!!!
How do you know Gabriel is an archangel? :)

So Andy Burnham is the unions choice eh? He's been my favourite to lead Labour long before the election. I must have more red in me than I thought. ;)

Saw Burnham on the Andrew Marr show this morning. The way he was talking it sounds like he thinks its a done deal.

He also said he supports an EU referendum, despite the fact that he is pro Europe. That will be a complete turnaround seeing that Milibands message was that Labour were totally opposed to a referendum.

Could be some interesting times ahead.

I think Burnham is a straight talker. I don't think he will ever be Prime Minister but reckon he will stabilise the party and prevent them falling further back in five years time.

I reckon he could go all the way Mike. If he gets the job and can get the party back on track, he could well lead them to an election success in 2020.

Another five years of the tories hammering the British people should make the job a whole lot easier. And I imagine Cameron and his gang will slowly start working their way up the social ladder of who their draconian cuts will effect, so there will be more people ready to kick them out of office.
