Former Reading referee Stephen Green dies during RideLondon-Surrey cycling event

The 55-year-old, who was a leading referee in Reading for the past 30 years, died while cycling up Leith Hill during RideLondon-Surrey

Former referee from Reading Stephen Green died during the RideLondon-Surrey cycling event at the weekend. Mr Green, 55, had been a leading referee in the town for the past 30 years, a level four referee tutor who had worked at national level. He had also been chairman of Reading Referees' Association and chairman of a local cup competition.

Around 26,000 cyclists took part in the event which was part of the cycling festival in the capital which ran from Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2. Mr Green was climbing Leith Hill - Surrey's highest point - when he collapsed just before midday on Sunday. He received medical attention from emergency services and an air ambulance attendance but he died at the scene.

His wife said that he had died doing something he loved and welcomed donations in Stephen’s memory to his Action A-T fundraising page on Virgin Money Giving http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=StepGreen&d-49489-p=4

Stephen's son Nick also posted on the RideLondon Facebook page and said: "Thank you all for the very kind words about my father. Myself and all my family would like to thank each and every one of you for your kind words and concerns."

A RideLondon statement said: "All involved in the organisation of the event express sincere condolences to Stephen’s family and friends."

Mr Green was a keen cyclist who rode the event in 2013. Together with his wife and children, he had participated in the FreeCycle event in central London on Saturday. He was riding the 100 on Sunday with a friend to raise money for the children’s charity Action A-T, which deals with those who have Ataxia-Telangiectasia, which is a rare, genetic and degenerative childhood disease.

Struggling to get my head round this one. Was only talking to him the day before. Absolutely lovely guy & someone who has taught me so much.
