A request from daib0 to reproduce this here ... Celtic Football Club is a bug and you have caught it Being a Blackpool lad born and bred I have not had too many chances to be able to venture up to the vibrant city of Glasgow. However, when I have it is a moment I will savour for the rest of my days. My Dad is Scottish and comes from a working class background in Clydebank, a family of staunch Celtic supporters. Since day one I have been brought up to surround myself in and appreciate the culture that comes with the club. The ties to local community and the history of the formation of the club by Brother Walfrid all things I have come to appreciate more and more as I have grown older. Now 17 I have been able to boast some incredible Celtic-based experiences, my first ever game being one example. Unfortunately my first game was not at Celtic Park, instead it was at Old Trafford. The occasion was Roy Keane’s testimonial. It was on Tuesday 9th May 2006 and I remember every minute of it from start to finish. I came home from school on the Monday night and my Dad was sat waiting with an envelope, being eight at the time I was not used to receiving letters through the post, I knew instantly something was going on. So, excitedly I rushed over and opened the envelope, out of it I slipped two tickets with the words “Roy Keane Testimonial”, I was ecstatic. The buzz was incredible and the game would be when I realised just how much Celtic had been instilled into me. Before the day I had never been to a big stadium before, I had a season ticket for Blackpool and had been attending since I was 6 and up until this very season just starting I still remained a season ticket holder, though with current events I am following the ‘Not a Penny more’ campaign against owner Owen Oyston and chairman Karl, but Bloomfield Road is only small in comparison. Straight after school I raced home and there was my Dad waiting with a new Celtic top and scarf for me and we set off for Manchester. Arriving at about 5pm I soon realised just how special Celtic Football Club was, Manchester was covered in Green and White, thousands were there. We pulled into a pub about five minutes from the ground full of Celtic fans, the family-orientated aspect to the club was apparent, within ten minutes I was playing football in the car park with a group of lads who had traveled from Glasgow and it was as if we had known one another for years. It was such a brilliant experience to be surrounded with people who were all looking out for each other and had that one common bond that brought them all together. We made our way into the ground and walking out into the stands was one of the most amazing moments of my footballing life. It instantly strikes you just how big the ground is, the atmosphere already building an hour before kick-off and only Green and White as far as the eye could see. Out came the teams. 30,000 Celts roared them on to the pitch and began a chant of ‘Grand Old team to play for’, it was at that moment I knew I was part of Celtic Football Club. The game was a backdrop and I literally cannot remember any on-pitch action, I was too engrossed in the atmosphere. Random people who were sat around us engaging in conversations and one in particular I remember was an elderly gentlemen in his late 70’s, he leaned over to me after hearing it was my first ever game and he said “This will stay with you for the rest of your life, Celtic Football Club is a bug and you have caught it” and that line remains with me to this day. Celtic Football Club is the greatest club on earth for the sole reason that it is more than a club. It is a family, everyone looks out for each other and that sticks with you from day one. Though I am a Blackpool fan supporting my hometown, Celtic will always be in my heart alongside the Seasiders. As the elderly gentlemen told me “Celtic Football Club is a bug and you have caught it.” By Sean McGinlay My name is Sean McGinlay I am 17 years old and live in Blackpool. I am a Blackpool fan and have been attending games since I was 6 years old, however with the current ownership in place I haven't renewed my season ticket and will only be attending away games as part of the 'Not a Penny More' campaign which means that you don't spend money on anything that gives the Oyston family, owners of the club, revenue. I am also a Celtic fan as my Dad was born in Scotland and brought me up Green and White. Living in Blackpool I cannot get to as many Celtic games as I would like, however I have been to many Champions League nights and the occasional home and away league fixtures, I mainly watch games on the TV as frustrating as that is. I want to become a Sports Journalist and am currently heading into my final year at Sixth Form before hopefully taking a Sports Journalism degree at UCLAN University in Preston. I look forward to producing many unique articles for the site taking a different approach to creating pieces which I hope you will enjoy. |

I thought this was just a great article, sincere but passionate, and well worth the trouble to talk to him about bringing it onto here. Saun has been given a writer's role on the newly formed "Celtic Hub", one of their 4 leading writers. It's just the type of article that is perfect for our "Rivals, but Friends" section - please show your appreciation lads, and not just by an "I like" click which visitors don't see - drop a quick line as well!! |

I can relate to this, as Permian High School (American) football here in west Texas is much the same way. Our colours are Black and White, and one of the funniest conversations I overheard (of course, this was a shouted conversation, hardly private) was between two fans, sat about 5 rows apart, about the game the following week. They had agreed in general at which stadium gate to meet and an approximate time, but one asked 'And how will I find you?' and the other replied 'It'll be easy - I'll be the one wearing Black' and the fans all hooted in laughter - 2/3 of the Permian fans were always in black! I expect that would be like a Celtic fan saying he'd be wearing green... ![]() It is a shame what has been done to the Blackpool club. Too bad the FPP test (as if it had many teeth in it anyway) can not be applied to existing owners. |

Hi Sean, Lovely read. You should have a look At our member, "Darlington" play-off write ups, think you would enjoy them too, heartfelt and passionate about their clubs, and how it becomes part of your bloodstream! Best wishes for your 'A' levels next year. The world's your oyster. Here's hoping for better things for Blackpool! |

Lovely story Sean! While my own support of Reading comes from a more trivial source (namely Football Manager) I have got quite a few friends who have similar stories to you. Quite often support from a young age means you form a lot more of an emotional connection with your club which you clearly have. I have always lived in Cambridge and therefore have a tie to the club here, having played youth football for them. I still go to the odd match because I love still being able to stand in a terrace. And, very similar to your testimonial experience, you find quite a community feel there, with everyone chatting to one another. To mirror what Owlish52 said, it is a shame Blackpool are where they are now, and it only seems to be getting worse. The problem is, whenever things go wrong, it's always the fans that suffer the most. |
