The Royals have worked their way up to 3rd in the Championship Table and their reward is a visit from 2nd place Middlesbrough this Saturday. While only 1 slot ahead of the Royals in the Table, Boro holds a 5 point lead and a 5 goal advantage in goal differential, so we're not quite as close as it might seem at first glance. The Royals do get the advantage of playing in front of their home fans, but that has not always seemed to offer great benefits - perhaps that history changes this Saturday! And the Royals will almost certainly be without two of their significant players - both Matej Vydra and Stephen Quinn, who were designated as unlikely to be available by skipper Clarke. But with the deep and capable squad Clarke has assembled at Reading, the Royals have suitable replacements available, so they will remain competitive. Can Reading secure all three points and move closer to their rival? How do you forecast this match going? Points System - Note that this is a GOLD Match and the following point values will be doubled! 10 points - correct result e.g. you predict Reading 3-2 Middlesbrough and the result is Reading 3-2 Middlesbrough (includes an exact draw prediction; draw result & correct score) 7 points - correct outcome with correct goal difference e.g. you predict Reading 4-2 Middlesbrough and the result is Reading 3-1 Middlesbrough (this result includes a draw with the wrong score e.g. you predict a 1-1 draw and the result is 0-0) 5 points - correct outcome with incorrect goal difference e.g. you predict Reading 1-0 Middlesbrough and the result is Reading 3-1 Middlesbrough. 1 point - if you get the prediction completely wrong, you still get one point for taking part! Bonus Points You get bonus points for three things: 5 points - correct half-time score 2 points - correct goalscorers, for each goalscorer predicted that does indeed score (NOTE: this season you get points for correctly predicting the goalscorers of only Reading FC. You only get the points if Reading score the same amount of goals as you predicted or more. This prevents prediction of ridiculous scorelines for more points.) 5 points - correctly predicting the 'bonus question' within the specified tolerance. If one person comes closest to the actual value, that person will receive 7 points, but if two or more are both equally close, only the 5 points will be awarded. Please put the score in this format: Reading 3-1 Middlesbrough (HT: 2-0) [Home x-y Away format] Hector Hurtado Sa ...followed by your answer to the 'bonus question'... How many total shots will be credited to both teams, per the BBC in this match? Credit will be given for being no more than 3 off the total. Good luck to each predictor and to the Royals! |

Not directly related to match prediction, but a site I enjoy looking at from time to time is http://www.sportsclubstats.com/England/Championship.html, which predicts and tracks the chances of various finishes in football (that specific page is the Championship, but many sports are tracked). They display current odds, based on their simulations, and monitor them for the season; looking at the Major League Baseball page, with the season almost over, you can highlight a club like the Texas Rangers and see how their calculated chances have waxed and waned over the full season. Back to Football (Soccer) again, you can also see in the Table provided, their calculated percentage chance of say Reading finishing in each position in the Championship Table - just now, they give RFC a 22% chance for automatic promotion, a 40% chance to make the playoffs and only a 38% chance to finish 7th or lower, but oh how those can change with a win or a loss! A Reading win against Boro would reduce Boro's chance (by their estimation) to win the Championship by 30.1% while improving RFC's by 12.7% - and up RFC's estimated chance for promotion by 26.8%, to 48.5%! Not every league has been updated to current yet. Edited by Owlish52, 1 Oct 2015, 12:10 PM.
