Hands off Tilehurst Library say petitioners

A petition with almost 1,000 signatures is presented to Reading Borough Council to pre-empt any potential threat to Tilehurst Library

“Hand’s off Tilehurst Library” was the simple message to Reading councillors last night. Former councillor Peter Beard handed in a petition to Reading Borough Council on Tuesday, October 20. It had nearly 1,000 signatures which emphasised the value of Tilehurst Library.

It said:

"It is the only library within walking distance of most of the residents in Tilehurst and there is free parking nearby for those with cars. The staff have built up excellent relations within the community with visits to primary schools and stands at local events. We have no community centre and the library provides a hub for activities and a contact point for council information"

Mr Beard said: “This petition supports all the libraries in Reading but especially our own local library.”

Responding to the petition, Councillor Paul Gittings, lead member for culture, sport and consumer services, said: “I completely agree with the importance and value of library services. For this reason, while considerable efficiency savings have been delivered in recent years, this Labour administration has made sure service levels have been largely maintained, so for instance library opening hours are above the national average in Reading.”

He went on: “In spite of our aspirations for Reading’s library service, cuts to Government grant funding received by local authorities have undermined the ability of Reading Borough Council to continue to deliver library services in the way we have done in the past.”

The borough council is looking at cuts of a further £39 million over the next three years and is attempting to cut £600,000 from the library service in the coming year

Cllr Gittings said: “As part of this programme to deliver savings, it is proposed that the whole library service is reviewed and reorganised on the basis of objective criteria and the input of those living, working and studying in the borough.”

The review has reached phase two in which options will be developed then put out to a second round of public consultation.

Cllr Gittings said: “Crucially, I must emphasise that no decisions have been taken at this time about how the savings will be made - we are listening to local people and would encourage communities and interested stakeholders to take an active part in the consultation and have a say in the future of the service.”

I used it quite a lot as a kid, would be very sorry to see it go - anyone else feel the same?
