Big amounts we're talking about here ... Mirror Police facing £50,000 bill after arresting WRONG Manchester United fan at FA Cup tie Alan Taylor was handcuffed prior to United's semi-final defeat at Wembley to neighbours City and wasn't released from a police station until 2am The police are facing a £50,000 bill after arresting the wrong Manchester United fan prior to a football match over four years ago. Alan Taylor, a 51-year-old father-of-four, was handcuffed and taken to a police station prior to United's FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City in 2011. He was innocently trying to help a friend who had been knocked to the floor but ended up being arrested after police believed he was responsible for interfering with the arrest of another fan. At the time he was told he was being arrested for obstructing officers but was later charged with affray. Mr Taylor wasn't released from Wembley Police Station until 2am the following morning, meaning he missed the match. Speaking about the moment he was cuffed, he recalled he and his friend walking by a group of aggressively chanting City supporters only to turn round and find his friend on the ground. “I lifted him, turned him and pushed him in the direction we were supposed to be going to get to our turnstiles,” Mr Taylor said. “As I was about to follow, I was grabbed from behind and pushed against the stadium wall. That’s when I was arrested.” He was later cleared of any wrongdoing. He will receive £5,000 damages and the police must also pay its own legal costs and half of Mr Taylor's after a jury found that he had been assaulted and imprisoned wrongly. Jurors at Central London County Court heard that Mr Taylor is of "impeccably good character." “It’s not about the money, the main thing is I was completely vindicated," Mr Taylor added. “The worst thing was that my friends and family knew I had been arrested. My kids saw me go to the football every week, and then one night I didn’t come home.” |
