At its most simplistic you either put huge ground forces in there and do away totally with the Islamic State and any other terrorist area, or come out altogether so there's no excuse to attack ... half-and-half doesn't seem to work ...

"Unfortunately there is no easy solution, the Western powers became involved many years ago by carving up the old Arabia and now as a consequence Sunni and Shia tribes of Islam are at each others throats in a chaotic Iraq (no thanks to the West) and a tyrant in Syria who bombs his own people. Throw in Shia Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah and Sunni Saudi Arabia coupled with the response from the Western Nations, plus Qatar, Jordan and Bahrain and what do you have, utter chaos.
A Sunni group, you could call them extreme certainly when you think how strict the Saudis are and ISIS are way beyond them in practising a religious doctrine, even down to beheading those that smoke, let alone steal or take photographs or film.
ISIS rule by terror, the laws they have implemented in parts of Syria they have taken over makes Assad's previous rule look like a vicars tea party in comparison.
So the West's response is to bomb them, now joined by the Russians with no doubt their own agenda and the way back for ISIS is to attack the countries carrying out the bombings.
France an easy target compared to others in the West, as Sunni Muslims live in poor boxed in suburbs of Paris and Lyon and Marseille while some no doubt have been and fought in Syria and with open borders hardly difficult to bring weapons into the country, a much easier scenario than the UK.
The Balkans are awash with weapons since the war there in the nineties, and vehicles can freely move without restrictions from Croatia and Slovenia across Italy/Switzerland into France without any border controls, so much for Schengen.
So there you have it, France with disenfranchised youngsters, arms easy to get into the country and in their eyes a cause to follow.
ISIS will not be bombed out of existence, only with a combination of troops on the ground and air power combined will rid them in the .Middle East but for those who return to their original countries the fight may go on for some time to come, we should get used to Paris and Tunisia and Sharm"

Very informative article in my opinion -

BBC News

Paris attacks: A new type of terrorism?

Starts: The scale of the near-simultaneous bombings and shootings in Paris has left France reeling in shock. With nearly 130 people dead, along with eight suicide bombers, it is Europe's worst terrorist attack since the 2004 Madrid train bombings. It raises new, pressing questions about the ability of Western security forces to prevent such random carnage.

Confirmed that at least one of the terrorists was registered as a refugee in Greece last month. There must be hundreds that have got into Europe that way. At least Cameron got it right when he said we would only take selected refugees from the camps.

more from the same chap -

It is virtually impossible to protect the public fully, when the IRA carried out their bombings they were mainly against "soft" targets, such as the pubs in Birmingham and Guildford, the Stock exchange, Hyde park and Regents park, the bandsmen college at Deal and the Baltic exchange that come to mind.
It was a time of heightened security yet the bombs still went off, as I said it is impossible to police everywhere and the public should appreciate the job the security services do even when things go wrong.
The French of course have the added problem of Europe, well most of it anyway having no border controls so people and weapons are easily moved from one country to another by road virtually unhindered.
Perhaps Europe will look at the Schengen agreement and consider how it in fact aides terrorists to be able to move about so freely.
Tunis on the beach, Madrid the trains and along with Paris all relatively soft targets.
The Russians go into Syria and bomb ISIS and one of their planes looks very much like I suggested some time go probably brought down by an ISIS bomb, Hezbollah crossed over the border from Lebanon and attack ISIS and a bomb goes of killing thirty in Beirut and France using it's air force to bombe ISIS and now Paris.
Their is a link there Mr Cameron.

Impossible to imagine the terror this young woman felt.

you never think it will happen to you. It was just a friday night at a rock show. the atmosphere was so happy and everyone was dancing and smiling. and then when the men came through the front entrance and began the shooting, we naiively believed it was all part of the show. It wasn't just a terrorist attack, it was a massacre. Dozens of people were shot right infront of me. Pools of blood filled the floor. Cries of grown men who held their girlfriends dead bodies pierced the small music venue. Futures demolished, families heartbroken. in an instant. Shocked and alone, I pretended to be dead for over an hour, lying among people who could see their loved ones motionless.. Holding my breath, trying to not move, not cry - not giving those men the fear they longed to see. I was incredibly lucky to survive. But so many didn't. The people who had been there for the exact same reasons as I - to have a fun friday night were innocent. This world is cruel. And acts like this are suppose to highlight the depravity of humans and the images of those men circuling us like vultures will haunt me for the rest of my life. The way they meticoulsy aimed at shot people around the standing area i was in the centre of without any consideration for human life. It didn't feel real. i expected any moment for someone to say it was just a nightmare. But being a survivor of this horror lets me able to shed light on the heroes. To the man who reassured me and put his life on line to try and cover my brain whilst i whimpered, to the couple whose last words of love kept me believing the good in the world, to the police who succeded in rescuing hundreds of people, to the complete strangers who picked me up from the road and consoled me during the 45 minutes I truly believed the boy i loved was dead, to the injured man who i had mistaken for him and then on my recognition that he was not Amaury, held me and told me everything was going to be fine despite being all alone and scared himself, to the woman who opened her doors to the survivors, to the friend who offered me shelter and went out to buy new clothes so i wouldnt have to wear this blood stained top, to all of you who have sent caring messages of support - you make me believe this world has the potential to be better. to never let this happen again. but most of this is to the 80 people who were murdered inside that venue, who weren't as lucky, who didnt get to wake up today and to all the pain that their friends and families are going through. I am so sorry. There's nothing that will fix the pain. I feel priviledged to be there for their last breaths. And truly beliving that I would join them, I promise that their last thoughts were not on the animals who caused all this. It was thinking of the people they loved. As i lay down in the blood of strangers and waiting for my bullet to end my mere 22 years, I envisioned every face that I have ever loved and whispered I love you. over and over again. reflecting on the highlights of my life. Wishing that those i love knew just how much, wishing that they knew that no matter what happened to me, to keep belieivng in the good in people. to not let those men win. Last night, the lives of many were forever changed and it is up to us to be better people. to live lives that the innocent victims of this tragedy dreamt about but sadly will now never be able to fulfil. RIP angels. You will never be forgotten.

The scale of the carnage reflects the shocking power of modern weaponry in the hands of fanatics. Nearly five hundred people killed or injured by eight men within a couple of hours. The sheer inhumanity is almost impossible to comprehend.

Interesting thoughts from the Blackpool man. He sounds like he knows what he is on about.

The darkness will get darker I'm afraid, but light shines in darkness all the more.
