A transgender woman who was born a man has been sent to an all-male prison sparking fears for her safety.

Tara Hudson, 26, has lived as a female all of her adult life and undergone six years of gender reconstruction surgery.

Her mother condemned the move and said her daughter's own doctor had confirmed that she is now a woman.

But magistrates sentenced Miss Hudson to 12 weeks inside an all-male Bristol prison after she admitted assault because her passport states she is still a man.

It's a difficult one really. She could now get her passport changed after a ruling a couple of years ago. Surely 'she' would be in severe danger in a mans' prison? I mean, those photos ARE quite hot, looks totally a gorgeous woman !!

But which prison she should go?

A male prison?
A female prison?
A mixed prison of some type?
Avoid prison?

The law perhaps needs looking at and changing.... what do you think?

If she has had all the necessary surgery to become female, and she lives her life as a female, it seems crazy that she should be sent to a male prison.

This is one of those thorny issues that our government hasn't got its head round yet.

She was sent to a male prison because she hasn't changed her passport. Seems like a pretty big omission on her part. Especially now. The best way to have avoided this is to not have assaulted someone in the first place...
However another transgendered woman who was sent to a mans prison apparently committed suicide last week :(

I can't say I've read anything about this until you posted the thread daib0. Agreed, the best way to avoid the problem is not to break the law but, once its happened, the authorities should have enough nous to reach the most sensible decision, and clearly sending her to a male prison doesn't seem to be the the most sensible decision.

The obvious dangers to her are very clear, but the pressure it puts on the prison where she's held will be immense. I imagine she would be segregated from the main prison population, but even that won't offer 100% safety unless she is watched by staff all the time she is out of her cell.

Its ridiculous. If somebody wants to be transgender then let them and if she has had the surgery she should be placed in a female prison.

If they are legally registered as a male - they should go to a male prison. If they are legally registered as a female - they should go to a female prison.

But what does legally registered mean Clyde? If a person goes through all the procedures of having a sex change operation, and thereafter lives their life as the man or woman they've become, surely that's far more evidence of their commitment than a piece of paper?

And I'm doing my best to be objective here, which is a little difficult as I find the whole transgender thing a bit weird.

There's a law that enables transgender people to change their legal gender - which would affect which prisons they would go to. It simply recognises that they have changed their gender.

In this case - if the person has had surgery to become a woman, then they should go into a female prison.

So, we're all in agreement.
Most boring controversial topic ever...
I suppose it's a sign of the times that we've progressed, as a society, to where this topic is seen as a non-starter in a football fan's forum! I hope this is a reflection on society in general!

I do wonder how this would have gone 5 -10 years ago though!
