If ever there was a clear warning for Cameron to keep his nose out of Syria, surely the incident between Russia and Turkey is it?

Analysis: Mark Lowen, BBC Turkey correspondent

After Turkey became the first Nato member to shoot down a Russian plane in over half a century, the question now is how will Moscow respond?

President Putin called Turkey an "accomplice of terrorists" and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov cancelled a planned trip to Ankara on Wednesday. But the UN and Nato have urged both sides to de-escalate the crisis. According to Ankara, the Russian Su-24 was warned ten times about entering Turkish airspace, though Moscow says there was no such communication. But Turkey also said the violation lasted just seventeen seconds. And given signs that a united front was beginning to form against Islamic State, there will be diplomatic pressure on both sides to focus instead on the common threat from the militants. The tough talk from Ankara and Moscow will no doubt continue - but whether there will be serious retaliation is less clear.

This from the Blackpool forum recognized military expert!

" I can only tell you from my experience that goes back a wee while, no it was after the bi-planes.
The airspace around the UK then and it is possibly still the same is not a constant measure from land and varies in distance from just a few miles to several hundred miles.
The Russian jets probably do exactly the same as they did back in the sixties, they run close to the fringes of the air space and occasionally just flirt with it at times in an effort to gain a response.
We used to do exactly the same, cross into the Baltic and run roughly 25 miles off the German, Polish and Baltic states coastline listening for the give away signals of the missile sites as they locked on which gave us an indication as to where they were situated, (this was information that was needed just in case we ever went on a mission to Russia), swiftly followed by a couple of MIG's, their pilots who would then wave and point towards the west.
So guys my guess it that they run the fringes of our air space and because there are no straight lines might occasionally cross a few miles of our airspace and within minutes be hugging the edges again."
