Football fan banned after racially abusing Reading player

A man has been given a Football Banning Order for racist abuse directed towards a Reading Football Club player.

Andrew Docherty, 36, of Longlands, Bradford, West Yorkshire, was issued with a three year Football Banning Order and a six week custodial sentence, suspended for a year, at Reading Magistrates’ Court.

Docherty was found guilty by a district judge of one count of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress which was racially aggravated and directed towards Reading player Garath McCleary.

It happened during an FA Cup Quarter Final replay at the Madejski Stadium in Reading on Monday 16 March this year.

In the 42nd minute of the game McCleary was about to take a corner kick when he was subjected to the racist abuse by Docherty, who was sitting in the away end of the stadium.
