Newbury bypass protest figures reunited after 20 years

In January 1996 an army of eco warriors became national news when they took to the trees in Newbury to try and prevent the construction of a bypass.

To mark the anniversary, BBC South has reunited both sides of the argument to hear their views 20 years on.

Among the key players were the Under Sherriff of Berkshire Nicholas Blandy and protester Phillip Pritchard.

I have spoken in depth to staff within the Highways Agency about the amount of grief the protesters gave them over the Newbury bypass when I was in my last job. Some of the stories are quite remarkable.

Apparently some Greenpeace demonstrators actually stormed their HQ in Birmingham and took it 'hostage' over the whole situation. I am too young to remember it happening, but it sounds like there was so much of an issue about something that in reality is a no brainer?! All that traffic going through Newbury would be absolutely horrendous!
