Emmanuel Adebayor - Forget about him?

Does anybody remember a big strong powerful striker from Togo, who Arsenal signed from Monaco for a fee that was over 7 million and raised many eyebrows, he was just 21 years old and had a decent reputation in France, but wasn't exactly setting the world alight with his goal scoring form. 22 goals in over 100 games wasn't exactly Arsenal quality in many people's eyes. He was a part of the Monaco team which went all the way to the final of the Champions League in 2004, playing 9 times in the competition.

But Adebayor scored goals when in an Arsenal shirt and became a more then capable striker for the London club, which included a 24 goal Premier league haul in the 07/08 season. As well as scoring over 60 goals in 3 and a half years for the Gunners, he also added 22 assists.

Man City decided to splash out around 22 million to bring him to Manchester as part of their spending spree. At the time, his stock had risen and he was the reigning African Football of the Year, and was also on route to win his 5th straight Togo Footballer of the year award. He spent a season and a half at Man City and after a promising start, he ended up with 19 goals from his 45 appearances. His reputation had taken a bit of a hit, but Real Madrid took him on a season long loan deal, adding another top club to his CV.

He didn't become a regular in Madrid, but scored 2 Champions League goals, 5 in La Liga and 1 in the Copa Del Ray as he won his first trophy in football with Madrid as they lifted the Copa Del Ray in 2011.

His stop start spell in Madrid had began raising questions about his time at the top end of European football. But he was still a top striker in many people's eyes and so another loan spell begun upon his return. This time Tottenham Hotspur took him on a season loan. This is where Adebayor re-ignited his goal scoring spark and had a terrific season in North London. He scored 17 and set up another 11 in 33 Premier League appearances. In the summer, Spurs grabbed what seemed the bargain of the summer, signing the Togo forward for under 5 million after an impressive season.

However, it all didn't go according to plan, Adebayor managed just 5 goals in 25 league appearances the following season and despite finding the net 14 times in all competitions, in 25 appearances, in the 13/14 season, a return of just 2 league goals last season seen him released by Spurs.

Not bad career for any forward, but consistency is obviously a problem. At 31 years of age, he could suit any club in the Premier League looking for a striker who has a record of finding the back of the net in big sides, especially on a free transfer, but his wages could prove a stumbling block. He's been without a club since September, but Crystal Palace are rumored to be close to his signature. Once a big name, oh how he has fallen, but can he re-ignite his career? I still think he has the talent to do so.

I think he's a bit lazy at tracking back and putting in a shift - so he wouldn't fit into the lower half of the Premiership in my opinion. He reminds me a bit of Berbatov in the way he can be in the right place at the right time - but that said he's a bit of a liability in more ways than one.

Don't get me wrong he was and probably still is a top quality striker - but when a good all rounded striker is hard to come by in this day and age, you would have thought that there would have been a club who would have taken a punt on him by now if everything was rosy wouldn't you?

Also the fact he's probably after 150k a week in wages rules himself out of most well run clubs. I did hear that QPR were looking for him.. We all know they're such a well run and honest club :D

If he's close to signing for Palace, surely he won't be getting anywhere near even 100k a week?

He is a bit like Berbatov, who's goal record also can't be questioned. He would be good back up to Kane if Tottenham had kept him.

I've never liked him because of his ego. He thinks he is the best player ever, and acts like it whenever he scores. Unfortunately, he isn't that good a player, but more of a poacher. He will hang in and around the box and knock in chances. He has good goal rates but not a player who I have ever or will ever rate.

He is also highly overpaid, unfortunately Tottenham have been lumped with that bill for some time now.

Tottenham released him in September, are they still paying a portion of his wages? :O

Continued to be linked with a move to Crystal Palace, a club in need of a goalscorer, looks like the right move.
