They can't do a lot now they are in the premiership and for 2 seasons now. The Premiership is run by FA not Football League so they wont be docked points or fined by them. As said above the worst they will get is a fine and it will be small potato compared to what they are going to get know they are winning the league and next season going to get Champions League revenue. Bet Leicester are quaking in their boots on this one. |

The BBC has an article making the case that it is impossible to convey the magnitude of Leicester City's possible triumph in the Premier League, a result likely but not yet secured (Link: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36028733 ). Since you blokes can not even spell the name correctly (it should be Lester - you always use too many letters! Labour, indeed! Your writers get paid by the letter or what? ), I'm not too surprised you are failing to find a parallel. But as a Yank, I know anything you blokes (and lasses) can do, we Yanks have already accomplished (or at least that's our story , and we're sticking to it ). A simple historical parallel to the Leicester City run would be the US Olympic Ice Hockey team's win over the Soviet team in "The Miracle on Ice" during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York. Much like Leicester City's current situation, that win set the stage for a gold medal, but was not quite the finished item (the USA had to beat the Finns to finish things off - Lester City [fixed that for you , you're welcome ; it's our Burden to fix your messes - see WWI and WWII] don't even have to play the Finns!). Our college boys did get 'er done, can your Foxes copy them and finish the deal?(all in good fun )

BBC Sport Leicester City: Now or never for Premier League title, says Claudio Ranieri Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri believes it is "now or never" for the Foxes to win the Premier League title. Leicester have enjoyed a remarkable campaign and are five points clear of Tottenham at the top of the table with four games remaining. They are already guaranteed a top-three finish and Champions League football next season, and Ranieri say his focus is now on winning the title. "It is this year or never more," he told BBC sports editor Dan Roan. "We achieved the Champions League - a great achievement for everyone but now we try to win the title with all our strength, all our heart, our soul, everything. We need eight points and we are champions, and we try to do this. I said to my players that now is the right moment to push." It is the first time Ranieri has admitted Leicester could win the title, having deflected questions on the subject since Christmas. Full article: http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/36112383 |

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36154211 Punter loses 5p on bet on Foxes to win Premier League ![]() A football fan has been called the "world's most calamitous punter" - after losing 5p on a bet on the Foxes to win the Premier league. The unnamed gambler put 50p on Claudio Ranieri's team to finish top before the season began at odds of 5,000-1. But he cashed out after an opening day win for 5p less than his stake and will now miss out on a £2,500 pay day. Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams said: "It is an absolute mystery. He must be feeling pretty sick." Leicester will win the title if they beat Manchester United on Sunday. If they lose, they could still win the title the following night if nearest rivals Spurs lose at Chelsea or with a win over Everton on 7 May. Williams added: "He must go down as the most calamitous punter in history. "He must have thought the wheels were going to come off after the first win and decided to cut his losses." Ladbrokes are in the process of trying to contact the man, who lives in the East Midlands, to offer him a consolation to "soften the blow".

Said in jest as it was, Lester's triumph (should it be just that) is set in entirely different contexts to the Miracle on Ice. Firstly, the hockey example is a one-game thing, really. You're talking about apparent disparities between two teams and the gulf in class that had to be overcome. You may throw in some political/historical significance to that to spice it up a bit, but that's really all there is to it, right? It's not comparable. It IS comparable to a FA Cup-set, but not to a whole season of miracles. It's like rolling double sixes 38 times in a row. To go into a bit more detail, haven't we all been moaning about the predictability of the premier league in the last few years? The major contention being that only the top 4 teams had a chance EVER to win. Since Abramovich bought his way to the title, with the Citizens following suit a few years later, we've all been saying how boring it had become. So, for Lester, a non-top 4 team to win, alone, would be a miracle. Additionally, Lester were so nearly a Championship side not too long ago, and they experienced their own miracle simply by avoiding relegation. That on its own was like a fairy tale. For them to beat ONE of the top four teams was, again, another miracle (mind you, I don't know which teams they've beaten, maybe all of them?). When Reading beat Liverpool, if was out of this world. I don't think we beat Chelsea, Man Utd, and I KNOW we've never beaten Arsenal (they always outclass us - except that one memorable game). Had we done that, I would have been blown away. And, though this is no longer the class, most people would have said that Lester weren't (at the time) a bigger/better club than Reading since we were then one of those clubs going up and down a bit and awakening as a possible Premier club fixture (like Stoke, perhaps). Few people would have said we were a million miles behind them. Now, though, that seems stupid. We clearly are. in almost every way. Anyway, for Lester to consistently play above their 'station' all year has been unbelievable every single time they didn't lose, and when they DID lose, for them not to continue to lose was almost as amazing. US v Soviet hockey might have been monumental for the surprise that it was, and the political implication of such a underdog victory (that, conversely, mirrored American fears that the Soviets might do the same thing to them in the political arena) given the cold climate that it was held in, but Lester's apparent achievement dwarfs is by the magnitude of 1000. |

Nice write-up. Leicester winning (if they do) the Premier League biggest shock in sporting history? I think so.. can't think of a bigger shock. Congrats Leicester! |

Excellent write-up, and appreciate both the effort and the perspective. And I do fully agree about the predictability of the top end of the Premier League. It is very refreshing to see a club not known as a Big Money Club win the top league. The relegation aspect is a bit lost Over Here, as we don't really have that possibility in our sports. And while we talk about Big Market (New York, Los Angeles) and small market (Kansas City, Minnesota, Green Bay) teams here in the USA, revenue sharing (which you have in English football, but only to a degree) and a salary cap (which FFP might eventually begin to imitate) make those differences much less severe here. Major market teams can still have a stronger draw, as endorsements and other 'indirect' opportunities are always a consideration, but we really do not have any league situation that matches Leicester City, so a Kansas City World Series win is not at all the same magnitude (a surprise, yes, but nothing like the Foxes potential achievement). BTW, their match Sunday is on National TV here. Before some of the relatively recent reshuffles in college football, there were a few situations that had some parallels, esp. one I lived with, with my university (Rice, attendance <4,000) in the same conference as the University of Texas (attendance ~40,000), but the seasons were shorter, and that was probably the only situation that unbalanced (and Rice got hammered regularly in most sports). The Owls (my screen name source) did make some waves in some sports (won the NCAA baseball championship in 2003, defeating UT along the way), but those would be considered minor sports, where English football is anything but minor. Best of luck to the Foxes! |
