Just wondered what you thought on racism in football generally amongst children, just so happens this Beeb article picks up on an (isolated) case in Leeds ... but probably isn't as isolated as all that BBC News Racism claims in Leeds junior football match The football authorities are investigating claims of racist abuse in a junior football match in Leeds. Chapeltown Juniors U13 players said the abuse included being called a racially offensive word in a recent match. Lutel James, the team's coach said: "The racism happens on a regular occurrence but it's one of those things that's easy not to talk about." Daniel McGeachie of the West Riding County FA said: "Every case of this nature we take incredibly seriously." The county FA has confirmed it is investigating the allegations. Mr James said: "For too long it [racism] has been ignored but now we are seeing a new generation of young players coming through." He called for the football authorities to look at an education process to help people "understand we are in a multi-cultural society". A Facebook video has been posted of the young footballers detailing the offensive comments. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leeds-35642817 |

Not going to comment on specifics, but this is not a UK problem. Corrective actions (aka 'punishments') are necessary, but not nearly sufficient, as this sort of behavior is learned at home, and external action just drives it underground. I'll not try to address the UK, but it will still be several generations before this will be eliminated from the US, if ever. My father was very good about avoiding racially charged speech while my brother and I were growing up, but in his later years, some habits from his childhood did come out. And visits to our relatives in north Louisiana gave us full exposure to unrepentant racist behavior; my cousins were full practitioners much younger than my brother and I (we were the oldest of our generation), so it remains very much alive in many areas here. As long as there are differences in skills and results, be it on the playing field or in other facets of life, race will remain a target for those less determined, less fortunate (luck does play a part), less skilled or less successful to blame for their failures, whether that blame is just or not - perhaps especially if it is unjustified. And if racial distinctions were ever eliminated, other factors (hair colour, eye colour, height, weight, whatever) would take their place. |
