Arsene Wenger Blames Title Drought on Former Stars Abandoning the Club

Arsene Wenger has launched a scathing attack on some of his former players, after he claims they were desperate to leave Arsenal instead of winning the Premier League title in North London.

Wenger responded to questioning asking what was different with this year compared to 2008, 2010 and 2011 by criticising his former players' attitudes in those seasons.

While no names were mentioned, it could be a reference to Cesc Fabregas who moved to Barcelona and Robin van Persie, who controversially moved to Manchester United.

"The mood of some players was more to get the next contract somewhere else than to win the championship because at the time we had to sell our players," Wenger said. "When we went into April some of our players were tapped up to go somewhere else and it is difficult to maintain the focus. That’s not the case at the moment. In 2010 I would say we lost it because the spirit was not exactly what it should be because of individual tap ups."

Thierry Henry also made the switch to Barcelona, while Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor joined Manchester City.

Is he right to be scathing in this way or is it sour grapes? - Over to you!

Why would they be desperate to leave Arsenal if they thought they had a chance of winning the title? Perhaps it's the knowledge that the club's ambition is to qualify for the Champions League without having the capability of progressing beyond the last 16.

Just sooo soft Arsenal.

None of the big/experienced players look like they could be bothered on Sunday.

Walcott may as well not have been on the pitch. Gabriel is a Championship class defender. As for Wilshire, has he smoked himself to death yet?

I have to say it just sounds like an excuse to me.
Surely every team has that same problem that players are tempted elsewhere for whatever reason.

For me Arsenal's problem with Wenger over the recent years is his lack of desire to splash the cash and bring in new blood. They have not been over active in transfer market and some transfers like Welbeck have been last minute or Ozil which to me seemed to be to appease fans annoyance at the lack of big name signings.
You can't knock his ability to find the unknown or player under the radar and bring them into the team but sometimes you need more that that.

Finally I think they lack the bottle to close down a title and every year they shoot themselves in the foot and conspire to lose their way.
Take the Man Utd game for instance, whether players were up for the fight as Gwent says is not what bothered me but more Wengers tactics. He knew United were injury hit and he had a big advantage if he took it so why did he only play 1 up front (welbeck). Why was Giroud not on from the start with him and have 2 up front to go for the goals. Why replace Welbeck with Iwobi who is more of a winger than striker. He only gave his two main strikers 20 mins together. He needed to win that game but played it like he didn't want to lose it rather than win it.

I will say though they have lost their most creative player in Cazorla and if he were there then who knows but it is a 38 game season and you have to expect injuries and have depth in squad to cope.
