It's been widely reported the last couple of days but Rafa Benitez has finally been appointed newcastle manager on a 3 year deal.

The contract also includes a get out clause for Rafa if Newcastle are relegated this season. Just going to take a look at the key factors behind any potential success at the club.

Track Record:

In my opinion, he is an excellent addition to the club. By far the best manager available for the club. He is a legend for us after his spell in charge from the 2005 season up to the end of the 09/10 season. We all know the success he has had in winning trophies and he has always managed to get the best out of under performing players, which is exactly what Mike Ashley is looking for. His most recent spell at Real Madrid was cut short this season after failing to have any control over the dressing room and losing the respect of the big egos in the club. But he has shown he can stabilize clubs, he done a decent job at Chelsea on an interim basis, winning the Europa League that season. He also won league titles at Calencia and a club world cup in a short stint as Inter Milan boss.

Squad managment/tactics:

Rafa likes to keep things tight all around the field and prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation. He likes a hungry goal scorer up front over a target man and likes to use 2 holding players as deep lying play makers. Had some trouble with regards to gelling with the squads at Inter Milan and Real Madrid but shouldn't encounter any such problem at Newcastle. I think it is a perfection opportunity for him to build a good squad of players and although the football might not be exciting and will probably include plenty of draws, it is effective football and picks up points which is crucial for Newcastle this season.

Transfers:

If Newcastle stay up, he will have the chance to overhaul the playing staff in the summer. Also prone to adding a flop or two in his Liverpool days he has a decent record in the transfer market. He brought the likes of Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres, etc. to Liverpool. He also managed to keep most of the stars at the football club, with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Torres always attracting plenty of interest during his time in charge. Newcastle proved last summer they have money to invest in this squad but I can see him having problems with the clubs hierarchy as he has done in the past. If he doesn't get full backing then it can end in heartbreak as it happened in high profile cases at Valencia, Liverpool and Inter Milan.

Verdict:

I think he has enough knowledge in him to avoid relegation this season. Dont expect many fireworks until maybe this stage next season but I think he could prove to be an excellent manager for Newcastle who are regarded as big club but are without a trophy since the 60s or so. Definitely one to keep an eye and maybe a decent bet for the League or FA Cup in the next couple of seasons. I think the club could be playing well away from the relegation zone in a years time, if he has backed to the hilt by the board.
