http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/reading-berkshire-news/reading-house-prices-rocket-500-11027891 House prices in Reading are up by around 500% since 1995, compared to 73% increase due to inflation. Makes it very difficult for people who don't own properties to own their home to be able to afford to buy a house. |

Blame London for the house rises. There is a reason why I had to buy my place in Swindon rather than buy near Reading/Basingstoke

I moved to Suffolk, from Reading, back in 1985. It was a promotion with my job, but the main reason I chose to make the move was because it was my opportunity to get on the housing ladder. I never wanted to leave Reading, it was so close to my home town of Henley, but my desire to own my own home was greater, so I decided to take the plunge. Property was, and still is, cheaper around here than in Reading, but I would say the percentage increase in prices is no different. Reading certainly isn't unique in rising property prices. |

Actually, I was looking at a website recently that showed property rises around the country. Outside of London, Reading was the only place on the rise THAT significantly. Many other places have gone up, but Reading is practically an island in comparison. |

Not property, but education here in the US has been crazy - my degree (over 5 years, 1970-1975) cost roughly $10,000 in tuition plus room and board for the class year. These days, a slightly lesser degree in four years from the same university would cost $208,000 for tuition plus room and board - a 2080% increase... And just to rub a bit of salt in the wound, I won a $2,000 a year scholarship that covered those costs for the first 4 years of that 5 year period (I got loans in the 5th year, plus had some summer income). The same scholarship is still available, and it is still $2,000 per year for up to four years, no increase at all... Edited by Owlish52, 16 Mar 2016, 03:10 AM.
