New £1.4m fund halt some West Berkshire library closures

Seven libraries and a mobile unit will be saved from closure as part of £1.4m "transitional funding" for public services in West Berkshire. Councillors announced the plans after threats to cut eight library services in the district in February.

Libraries will receive £475,000 funding over two years, but will transition to a self-service system to save money. Other services to receive money include bus routes, children's centres and the Newbury Corn Exchange.

West Berkshire Council said nearly half the comments received about the funding were about keeping libraries open. Council leader Roger Croft said he was "pleased" the district could offer a "lifeline" to public services, but funding will only be provided for two years.
He added: "We need to be clear however that this money is a lifeline which will enable these services to move to a more sustainable funding model. In particular, it will allow us to work with partners, community groups and parishes to secure these services in the long term."

Hungerford-based author Robert Harris said he was "delighted" by the announcement but added libraries may need to become "more community run" to ensure they remain open.
He added: "Ours can't be the generation to let libraries go, and I would be ashamed to be part of that generation."

The plans for funding will be confirmed at a council meeting on 24 March

Reading Buses tops national ratings for customer satisfaction
Satisfaction with bus services in Reading was top with 84 per cent, compared to the average of 62 per cent
Reading Buses has topped a national poll for customer satisfaction levels.

The company achieved an 84 per cent satisfaction rate, compared to the average of 62 per cent.

Chief executive Martijn Gilbert said: "This is a fantastic result for Reading and, of course for us too at Reading Buses.

"We have worked extremely hard to ensure we are offering an award winning service to the people of Reading and the surrounding area and this survey shows, alongside the work of Reading Borough Council’s highways and transport teams, we are doing a good job.

"We recognise, however, that congestion and knock on delays remain the single biggest challenge facing bus services and we continue to work with our stakeholders to make the case for the bus as the best way to get around, in turn helping to ease congestion."

The national poll, conducted annually by Ipsos Mori, also revealed satisfaction with public transport across the borough was top with 73 per cent against the average of 51 per cent.

Councillor Tony Page, deputy leader of Reading Borough Council and lead member for strategic environment, planning and transport, said: "Reading Buses – owned by the council - is one of our greatest community assets.

"I’m delighted these most recent independent surveys confirm the high quality of service delivered by the council’s bus company.

"Operating reliable bus services in Reading can be challenging and the council is committed to close working with all bus operators to promote further priority measures that deliver improved bus punctuality."

Four-and-a-half years for paedophile headteacher
'How could this happen in a primary school?'
A former headteacher convicted of sexually abusing two girl pupils has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Forty-seven-year-old Christopher Field, who lived at Green Lane, Chieveley, was sentenced this morning (Friday) by judge Zoe Smith sitting at Oxford Crown Court

Jurors convicted him of assault by groping a primary school pupil under her uniform and downloading 13 child porn videos on to his computer.

They had heard how Field groomed one of his victims by calling her “special” and the “prettiest girl in the school”, showering her with gifts, before sexually assaulting her in his office.

She responded by wearing crop tops, thinking that Field was her boyfriend.

On Thursday, March 10, Field was convicted of two counts of assault by touching a girl under 13, relating to two victims.

He was also convicted by a majority verdict of one count of making indecent images of a child.

The jury at Oxford Crown Court was unable to reach a verdict on one count of sexual assault and one count of causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

The Crown Prosecution Service decided it was not in the public interest to proceed with a new trial on the remaining charges.

Field had denied perpetrating a series of sex offences on the two girls in his care while headteacher at Woodcote Primary School, Oxfordshire.

He previously worked at Goring Primary School and Kennet Valley Primary School in Calcot, although there is no suggestion of any impropriety there.

The allegations came to light in 2014, when one of Field’s victims, by then a teenager, broke down in front of her parents.

She later told police that going to secondary school and learning more about sex had made her realise what had happened was wrong.

During the police investigation, the court was told, officers discovered a previous allegation made against Field, when another schoolgirl claimed he had rubbed her thighs in the dining hall.

Rebecca Austin, prosecuting, told the jury: “The question you will ask is: how on earth this could happen in a primary school?”

After the verdicts, Det Con Sarah Berry, of Thames Valley Police Child Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “This was a difficult case where two young girls, who did not understand what was happening at the time, were groomed and abused.

“They have shown great courage in coming forward. Both have been consistent and shown great determination in giving their evidence at court.

“I am sad for them that Field did not admit his guilt and thereby could have spared them the pain of reliving the ordeal in court.”

Reading named one of UK's top towns for small businesses

The town is ranked the sixth most high-growth small-business (HGSB) friendly city

Article starts: Reading has been ranked in the top 10 for the most business-friendly cities in the UK.

The town is ranked the sixth most high-growth small-business (HGSB) friendly city, according to the latest research produced by the centre for economics and business research (Cebr).

The Octopus league table is based on what the teams behind HGSBs told them were most important when building and growing companies, which included finance, talent and connectivity.

Reading is home to 387 HGSBs and has the highest concentration of HGSBs in its business community.

It also tops the table for economic growth, one of the three main performance indicators, and scores in the top 10 for demography and skills (sixth) but is bought down for connectivity and transport (24th).

Beth Morris reveals she pulled out of The Voice because she was addicted to cocaine

Beth Morris has revealed she pulled out of The Voice because of drug problems. The singer quit hours before the first live show. Chloe Castro also left the show before the quarter finals because of unconnected "health reasons". Beth told The Sun on Sunday that she realised she had a problem with cocaine two years ago. She said: "I was using them [drugs] to cope with various issues I was going through. I thought they would help me, but they were making the situation worse."

All four coaches - Paloma Faith, Ricky Wilson, Will.i.am and Boy George -turned their chairs for Beth at the blind audition stage when she sang Tina Turner's Nutbush City Limits. The singer, who is from Berkshire, chose to join Paloma's team and made it through to the live quarter-finals. She told the newspaper she had realised it was time to do something about her addiction and checked herself into The Priory treatment centre.
"Addiction is tough and I am sorry to say that I have relapsed on a few occasions," she explained. "When this has happened I have immediately sought help and I regularly attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings. I'm truly sorry I've let everyone down but I'm determined to put this behind me." Her coach tweeted she was "very sad" that Beth wouldn't be on the show anymore.
