Just when Rafa thinks Newcastle are perhaps gelling as a team and fighting a bit more then disaster strikes. With Tim Krul out for the season with injury they then lose Rob Elliott the number two playing for Ireland in the international friendlies. He is out for rest of season and probably the Euro's as well. That means they go into the weekend match against fourth bottom Norwich with their number 3 keeper Darlow and youngster Woodman as the available keepers. So considering how poor they have been at the back and how well Elliott had done are they now well and truly goosed? Does that make them near nailed on candidates to go down (if they weren't before)? The table currently is - Played - Points 15. Swansea 31 36 16. Crystal Palace 30 33 17. Norwich 31 28 18. Sunderland 30 26 19. Newcastle 30 25 20. Aston Villa 31 16 38-game season ... I think nearly everyone has Villa already down, then it's any two from three. But which two? Probably every possible combination in just about every forum. For what it's worth I've a sneaky feeling Sunderland might escape, for the fact that they've been in this situation several times now so have that experience in pulling off a lifesaver ... so meaning for me it'll be Villa, Newcastle and Norwich to go down. But I'm not really convinced either! |

Looking at the above chart, I think Swansea are all-but-safe, Palace need one more win to join the Swans....which means it then becomes Norwich, Sunderland & Newcastle fighting for the one remaining safe spot on the table. Given everything that's happened thus far in the PL season, I think Norwich will escape the drop and the Northeast will have to content themselves with away trips to Boro next year (assuming, IIRC, that Middlesborough remain in the Championship next season). |
