I know the Reading, Penns - I've been in touch with their football club ... but THREE others??! Get Reading Reading's American namesakes: Some facts you may not know Did you know there are four cities and towns in America called Reading? Reading, as you'll know, is a fine town with grand aspirations of eventually becoming a city. But did you know it has numerous namesakes in America? We've had a close look at the biggest, Reading in Pennsylvania, and found some more things you may not know about other the other Readings in America. Reading, Pennsylvania 1. Is it named after our Reading? Yes, it’s also in Berks County. 2. Early settlers there spoke “German Pennsylvanian” Immigrants from southern and western Germany bought the land in Reading and the Pennsylvanian German dialect was spoken until the 1950s. 3. It’s a city? Unlike our Reading, it’s a city, the fifth biggest in Pennsylvania. We expect America doesn’t have silly rules like having to have cathedrals to become cities. 4. It’s known as “Pretzel city” It has a lot of shops selling the savoury baked rings. Our own Reading of course has a link to baking, being the home of Huntley & Palmers, once the biggest producer of biscuits in the world, and the Biscuitmen (better known as Reading FC). ![]() ![]() 5. It has some of the highest levels of poverty in the whole of America According to the 2010 census, the city has the highest share of citizens living in poverty in the nation, with nearly half the people there living under the poverty line. Our Reading is constantly being named as a great place to live, although first-time house hunters may not agree. 6. Not many people there have been to college A survey in 2012 showed just eight per cent of people there have college degrees, compared with the national average per city of 28 per cent. In our Reading, according to the 2012 Census, 37.4 people are degree educated. 7. It has both the Reading Rockets and the Reading Royals The Royals are an ice-hockey team and the Rockets are an indoor lacrosse side. 8. Taylor Swift is its most famous resident The American pop superstar, who has been rumoured to be looking to move to the other Reading, well, Sonning, grew up in Pennsylvania ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reading, Massachusetts In this part of America, Reading is, in fact, in Middlesex. It was named after Reading and formed in 1644. It’s a small town with a population of around 25,000, according to the 2010 census. As opposed to Reading Pennsylvania, it’s a wealthy area with just one per cent of the population living below the poverty line. There’s no really famous people listed as coming from this Reading, with Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford probably the most well-known. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Reading Ohio THIS Reading is a tiny suburb of Cincinnati and has a population of just 10,500. ![]() --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reading, Vermont Reading, Vermont, is next to New Windsor and Plymouth, which suggests Americans haven't worked too hard at coming up with new town names. It also appears they don't have what we call villages. Reading in Vermont is distinctly smaller than the Microsoft Campus in Reading, but is still called a town. Reading Vermont is a town which had a population of 666 at the time of the 2010 Census. It’s 41 square miles in total, so there's fair bit of space for the population. ![]() ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Redding, California Okay, it's not spelt the same way but it's close enough. Redding is on the Sacramento River and is home to a number of attractions including Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Actor Tom Hanks is also reportedly from there. |
