What really surprises me is that BHS has hung on this long. Its always been a drab sort of shop, a bit of a poor mans John Lewis.

I was actually talking to my colleague last week who said he thought it had already shut down. Last night seeing that they were going into administration was a bit spooky... Butterfly effect and all that

Real shame, but BHS was a bit like Woolworths - everything they did, someone else did cheaper/better.

Think BHS, and I think 70s. Maybe harsh, but true.

I don't think it harsh at all Glenn. There's a bhs in Cambridge, or at least there was the last time I went there. It was one of those shops I'd go in if I'd run out of other options.

There may be other bhs stores in this area, but I haven't a clue where they might be. A bit like C & A when they closed down, they'd gone right out of fashion.

So, on the larger scale, are we seeing a radical change of shopping in the 21st century?

So, on the larger scale, are we seeing a radical change of shopping in the 21st century?
I believe we have been and are - the Internet brings shopping home to many people, and offers lower prices and the same (or better) quality in most cases, with better selection and to-your-door convenience. Books and music have lead the change, but fashion and general merchandise have followed. I'm not sure we'll see fresh foods come to be a mostly-Internet market, but there are some high-end and specialty providers that have made inroads even there. Some big firms can compete using brick-and-mortar merchandising, but they must be very nimble and financially sound to do so. Retail has always been difficult, but the Internet has made it more difficult - WalMart, Asda and Primark seem to be making things work, but Sears, K-Mart and Wards are in decline here, and now BHS there.

With the Internet, a big vendor can have inventories in multiple locations, but readily mobilized to fill orders, even internationally, while a brick-and-mortar business has more trouble reacting quickly. And these days, when every woman in the world can see what the Duchess of Cambridge or her children are wearing today and order it (or a close copy) on-line, the brick-and-mortar stores are in trouble.

Personally, there are two general bookstores (one new, one used) left in my local area (Odessa, TX) of 100,000+, so I order books through Amazon.com. When I needed a heater for my storage building, I had to order one, as no local outlet had any suitable units in-stock. I could order through a couple of local stores, pay $400+ and wait two weeks, or order through Amazon.com for $310 and have the same heater in a week. Not a hard call at all. Heck, I wanted to buy a couple of computer mice - I could go to WalMart and grab two off the shelf for $12 each, or place an order at WalMart.com, wait 2 hours, then go to the same store and pick up the same mice (literally off the shelf) for $6 each.
