I see that English education is now doomed - parents will be taking kids out of school regularly now and the standard of education will be forever compromised. Rubbish. And I see folks (likely teachers or their Significant Others) complaining that teachers are still not allowed to take holidays during the school term. Last I checked, teaching is a voluntary, paid (if likely under-paid) profession, while school attendance by students is a government requirement, not voluntary. The court does need to set some sort of guidelines - a 90% attendance, which is the threshold for persistent truancy defined by the Department for Education (per the BBC - link above) does seem a bit low. Thinking about the Real World, I believe 10 days sick leave is considered typical per year. Allow for 2 weeks vacation and 10 or so holidays per year (perhaps more in the UK - 10 is common here), that's 2 weeks sick out of 48 working weeks, or 4.2% sick time. A 95% target seems reasonable, or some other target between 90 and 95% - 90% does seem too low but 95% might be too high for a youngster that is sickly. Perhaps 95% with flexibility for the family if the child is ill often... |

There has always been a procedure to take children out of school for holidays over here Bill. It existed when I was at school, and that's a very long time ago. The current situation of having to go on bended knees to the school to get permission, then getting a fine if parents did take their kids out of school without that permission, is quite a recent thing. Although it has to be said, some schools are more accommodating than others. If they were to put as much effort into resolving the truancy problem in this country, which accounts for far more days lost in the school year than family holidays ever do, it might be understandable, but, as always, they go for the easy target. |
