To get each of the existing leagues down to 20 clubs, while retaining promotion/relegation from the Premier League, an additional 4 clubs must be relegated from each of the three existing FL tiers, so do they plan to go to a 3 up/5 down system for two years in the Championship, 4 years in League 1 and 6 years in League 2? Or will there be a one/two/three-season bloodbath with 3 up/7 down (almost 30% per League)? I doubt asking for volunteers would be very successful. Or perhaps limit promotion to 1 club a year for 2/4/6 years (with the PL only relegating one club each of the first 2 years - popular with them, no doubt)?

Or here's a perfect way to rank (and eliminate) clubs - let them bid to stay up, and the highest bidders stay in their current league while the lower bidders are relegated! This may work well for the low bidders, as many of them will be promoted in a season to fill slots of the high-bidding clubs that go bust! All sorts of simply marvelous options here! Rank by revenue, attendance, alphabetical order, time in their current League, physical location - there are no limits to the 'advantages' on offer!

And as for the idea that clubs could reduce playing staffs, I'll bet the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) is all-in for that 'advantage'!

Just working it out. Without the bottom four teams this season, we would've ended up on 35 points and in League One:

38 Game Championship
1 - Middlesbrough - 73pts
2 - Brighton - 70

3 - Hull - 70
4 - Burnley - 69
5 - Sheff Wed - 63
6 - Derby - 63

7 - Cardiff - 56
8 - Ipswich - 52
9 - Birmingham - 50
10 - Leeds - 50
11 - Brentford - 49
12 - QPR - 44
13 - Preston - 44
14 - Wolves - 43
15 - Blackburn - 41
16 - Nottm Forest - 39
17 - Bristol City - 39

18 - READING - 35
19 - Fulham - 33
20 - Huddersfield - 31

We would have been relegated the season before too.

I would be in favour of fewer midweek games and less fixture congestion, certainly.

Of course, this should only happen if the suggested monetary benefits were real. I can certainly sympathise with clubs who think they'd get less. The FL will have to prove that they'd get more money, I'd say, whether this would be in data analysis or through promises of extra funds.

If things are to be changing, what about some other changes that might be worth considering. Here are a couple to start on:

Parachute payments may only be used to pay out or buy out contracts of current players; money from the parachute payments could not be used to pay transfer fees or salaries of players not under contract at the end of January preceding a club's relegation; nor could they be used for non-salary operating expenses. This would allow relegated clubs to work through the contracts of their former Premier League players without providing a war chest for the relegated club to bring in new players at wages not reasonable for their new League. While not popular with recently relegated clubs, I think the majority of Championship clubs would be in favor of such a requirement.

:stirthepot: Late fouls and yellow cards are very common, as the risk of a second yellow late in a match is minimal. Change the rules to make the liability for expulsion on a second yellow to extend for a full 90 minutes of play, carrying over to the next match as necessary (to be tracked by the 4th official). This would be the next 90 minutes a club plays; if the player were removed from the match or not started in the next match, his 90 minutes liability would continue to run down, even if he were not on the pitch. That allows a manager to protect a player by keeping him off. Time-wasting would become much less attractive.

Thoughts? Other ideas? Let's be havin' ya!

With the exception of Championship teams less games are played now by all others clubs than twenty odd years ago as we no longer have multiple FA Cup replays and the old League Cup no longer has two legged first rounds. The Championship or old Division Two used to be 22 sides

I'd be interested in whether they would look to offer a continental competition for the second tier if this goes ahead - obviously not like the CL/EL, but maybe a Home Counties tournament, so teams in the second tier could play Scottish Premiership sides, and others from N.Ireland/Republic of Ireland/Wales. Just a thought...
