Reading's air pollution levels set to increase this week

Adults and children with heart and lung problems could risk health complications if they take part in strenuous outdoor activities on Friday

People with lung and heart problems should steer clear of outdoor physical activity in Reading today as increased levels of air pollution are expected.

Reading usually enjoys relatively clean air but the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) says the town will experience moderate levels of air pollution on May 27 and the following day.

Warm weather and easterly winds are expected to lead to widespread levels of moderate pollution in England and Wales.

This means adults and children with heart and lung problems could risk health complications if they take part in strenuous outdoor activities.

But they should be free to return to exercising outside on Sunday when low levels of air pollution are expected to return.

Dr Roger Brugge, who works at the University of Reading's weather station, states the change in levels of air pollution are down to wind direction and the vertical structure of the atmosphere close to the ground. He said: "The wind is forecast to settle down to an easterly direction, meaning that the wind will bring us air from the east - i.e. northern areas of mainland Europe. This is an area of Europe that is quite heavily industrialised and hence it is often a source of relatively polluted air."

I'd be interested to compare it with my local levels. Pollution is terrible here and I'm in one of the cleanest cities in China.

The PM 2.5 here is usually between 70 and 170. In Reading at the moment (last update anyway) it's 37.
