I believe that this competition hasn't been thought out well. FWIW I'd propose 8 regional cups and the winners go QFs - with any 'B' team ineligible to progress.

Out of interest, what happens if we get to the final of this competition and we have, say, Newcastle v Newcastle youngsters? Or if they meet in the SF?

That can't happen - as it's the first teams for League One and Two, with the sixteen "academies" from the Premier League/Championship in this competition.

ah, okey-dokey ... but if a League One side had an absolutely fantastic Academy??

I think they pick teams based on where the first team finished in the previous season - meaning that it's highly unlikely that it could happen, as the academy has to be Category One to take part. Category One requires teams to spend over £1.5m a season on youth development.

I believe this is the up to date list of Category One clubs:

  • Arsenal (PL)
  • Aston Villa (CH)
  • Blackburn (CH)
  • Brighton (CH)
  • Chelsea (PL)
  • Derby (CH)
  • Everton (PL)
  • Fulham (CH)
  • Leicester (PL)
  • Liverpool (PL)
  • Man City (PL)
  • Man Utd (PL)
  • Middlesbrough (PL)
  • Newcastle (CH)
  • Norwich (CH)
  • Reading (CH)
  • Southampton (PL)
  • Stoke (PL)
  • Sunderland (PL)
  • Swansea (PL)
  • Tottenham (PL)
  • West Brom (PL)
  • West Ham (PL)
  • Wolves (CH)

I read that Portsmouth is planning to walk out of their match with Reading's side shortly after kickoff. As long as the bloke with the bell is included, I strongly support their departure...

Anyone planning on going to any of the games? I'm considering it, but it's dependent on dates and ticket prices.

When I first saw the headline I thought it was about our first team being included in the competition, and was not happy. Then I saw it was our academy and thought, oh, that's alright then. Still not very interested in it though, and think I'd be a bit miffed if I supported a league 1 or 2 club.

As Clyde showed on the previous post, we can largely put out a first team given the restrictions (and the fact that Swift, Cooper and Evans all class as U21s).

Shouldn't be too much weaker than our League Cup eleven.

Don't like the fact that academy teams are in the competition, but I think Reading would have been stupid not to take advantage given the offer.

As matches, suspensions and injuries pile up, I expect the Reading sides in this Cup competition to weaken dramatically. But the early sides could be very strong. The only negative I can see is that this competition might impact the loan policy at RFC - some players might be held back rather than loaned out.
