Roy Hodgson: Euro 2016 failure has 'damaged' England

Roy Hodgson says England's 2-1 loss to Iceland and exit from Euro 2016 will cause longer-term "damage" to the team. And Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn said it is now "imperative" to find out why England are "brittle" at tournaments.

We need a manager who isn't tainted by favouritism, something that both predecessors of Hodgson did. I saw Eddie Howe's name on the list, obviously he has no experience internationally and little experience of managing star players, but he is the right sort of manager I would like to see in charge. Maybe a joint appointment of former players (Southgate/Shearer) could be the answer? Doesn't seem to have harmed Iceland.

The Iceland situation is a little different. The older seasoned manager (Lars Lagerbäck) is there to guide the younger one (Heimir Hallgrímsson) and then he's steping down after the Euros.

Maybe an Eddie Howe + Glenn Hoddle initial set up would work? Both good footballing managers playing the game in the right way.

WARNING THIS POST IS NEGATIVE

I have followed England since Euro 96, i was just 16 back then. And i can guarantee that if the new manager is English, he will fail. If we appoint a high profile foreign manager he will fail to. How do i know this? No i am not a member of the illuminati, its just what has happened at every tournament weve been part of. Nothing will change. It pains me to even be saying this, i love my country. I remember when Keegan was the big hope with his attacking style tactics, that blew up in our faces. So we go for the high profile foreign manager in Sven-Göran Eriksson and that was a failure to. Its great these managers got us to these finals but it would be nice to get far in them.

"'If we don't get results, they will try to hang me. But if I was an Englishman, they would also try to hang me.'"
Sven-Göran Eriksson

Sorry for the negativity. I blame Roy Hodgson for it. Made my blood boil.

we just don't seem to have players who can attack taking people on - if you don't create opportunities you won't score. England is all pass forward - check - pass back - pass sideways - pass forward - check - pass back etc. etc. etc. How do we get more talent to do wizardry, magic, clever flick ons, etc ???

From a neutral, Rashford (for all his 7 minutes or so) seemed to be the only attacking player I saw, and he seemed to have an impact. There may be other youngsters like him coming along.

To be honest, watching England on Monday was like watching Reading for the most part of last season (and the couple before)...

Tactically inept when Plan A fails, unwilling and unable to compete head-to-head with those who show a bit of agression and physicality. Add to that managers who the players had little or no respect for in the end and just gave up playing for, and most of all players who just don't seem to care or want it enough and become nervous when the crowd get on their backs and it all falls apart!!

If Stam can bring back any of these elements this coming season I for one will be a happy man :D

The only top English manager I would want is Allardyce, I think he is a very good motivator, which IMO is the main thing we need from the manager. It's clear we have the quality, they just aren't motivated enough to actually do anything with it.

You wouldn't want his style of play though.

Me neither. He's a good 'bread and butter' manager, but not good enough for the England job.
