Reading rated one of the top places to work in the UK

High job satisfaction and range of employment opportunities means the town scores highly nationally

Reading is officially one of the top places in the country for hiring people. The town has come third in the UK's top towns and cities for recruitment, with only Cambridge and Milton Keynes coming out higher. The rating is determined by the ratio of active job openings to population.

The research, carried out by recruitment specialists Glassdoor, also reveals Reading is the fifth best place in the UK for job satisfaction. Mark Di-Toro, spokesman for Glassdoor, said:
"Reading has been filled with some of the hottest businesses around for a while now. The area has become a hotspot for large multinational firms due to its closeness to London and relative cheapness of its rents."

Reading is seventh in the overall list for the top UK towns and cities to work in. This is above major cities including Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow. Factors taken into consideration for Reading's position included an average salary of £43,000, an average home value of £430,503 and a job satisfaction rating of 3.4. Some of the most popular job roles in Reading are sales associate, sales representative and technical support engineer.

Dr Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor's chief economist said:
"Cambridge has long had a reputation for one of Britain’s most loved cities, but now it’s emerged as a prime spot for high-tech companies which is clearly having an impact on where people decide to live and work. These results are a reminder that although there are more jobs in London and employees are generally pretty satisfied, it is a competitive place to work and an expensive place to live. Towns and cities such as Nottingham, Leeds and Reading offer decent salaries and job prospects combined with a lower cost of living which means your money will go further, you can save, and still and have a good quality of life."

Rank Town/City Overall job score
1 Cambridge 4.1
2 Milton Keynes 4
3 Nottingham 4
4 Leeds 3.8
5 Peterborough 3.7
6 Coventry 3.7
7 Reading 3.7
8 Bradford 3.6
9 Northampton 3.6
10 Swindon 3.6
