These are the latest odds given on another forum as to the probability of a town being given CITY status this year. It seems to be decided that some award/s will be made.

I put it up as Reading are the favourites!!

Reading 8/1
Doncaster 10/1
Guildford 12/1
Middlesbrough 12/1
Omagh 12/1
Dover 12/1
Bournemouth 12/1
Luton 14/1
Colchester 14/1
Tower Hamlets 16/1
Aberystwyth 16/1
Ayr 16/1
Milton Keynes 20/1
Stockport 18/1
Coleraine 20/1
Bolton 20/1
Dorset Town 20/1
Blackpool 25/1
Croyden 25/1
Southend 25/1
Ipswich 25/1
Stevenage 25/1
Wrexham 33/1
Swindon 40/1
Goole 40/1

Are you agreed that the Queen will probably give the town city status?
Would you in fact like Reading to become a city?
What about the other names on the list?

I thought the two main criteria to becoming a city was a university and a cathedral.
I understood it was only having a cathedral - look at tiny St David's in Wales ...
I heard about the cathedral and university donkeys years ago. The criteria could well have changed. Rochester is a city. It has a cathedral but no university.

I hope we get it. Although it gives license for the council and business to up the cost of everything it means we won't need to go through it all again, I guess it promotes us somewhat on a global scale, may make the football team more attractive etc. It'll happen eventually, so why not get it out of the way after all, we are the biggest town in England (that isn't a suburb of Birmingham *cough*Dudley*cough*)

Can't see that they would, but that wouldn't bother me really tbh.

How many other teams have added the postfix of City once they've gone from being a town, that didn't have town on before?

Bath were Bath AFC then Bath Railway, they became Bath City in 1902 despite being a city since 1590.
Birmingham became a city in 1889, becoming Birmingham City in 1943, after being Birmingham FC since 1905 (Small Heath Alliance/Small Heath previously).
Bradford became a city in 1897 and appear to have been Bradford City AFC since their inception.
Brighton don't flaunt their city status.
Bristol has been a city since 1155 and have been Bristol City since 1901, when they first took Bristol on as part of their name.
Cambridge has been a city since 1951 and simply upgraded from Cambridge Town FC.
Cardiff added City in, in 1907, after previously just being Cardiff FC.
Carlisle remain as Carlisle United.
Chester has been a city since 1541. The club changed their name from Chester FC to Chester City in 1931 but the phonenix club have taken on the original name of Chester FC.
Coventry has been a city since the 1300's and became Coventry City when they changed from Singers FC in 1898.
Derby remain Derby County.
Exeter's city status is time immemorial and became Exeter City in 1904 when Exeter United and St Sidwells United merged.
Hereford remain United.
Hull have always been Hull City
Lancaster City started as Lancaster FC, when they folded became Lancaster Town then simply upgraded to City.
Leeds remain United.
Leicester started life as Leicester Fosse, when the club folded they reformed as Leicester City in 1919 [city status was restored that same year].
Lincoln started life as Lincoln Rovers in 1884 but I can't tell when they changed name... Lincoln had been a city since the 1860's.
Manchester became Man City in 1894 after a few name changes. Manchester itself has been a city since 1853.
Newcastle remain United.
Newport remain County.
Norwich have been Norwich City since 1902 when they were formed, and remained that when reformed in 1919. Norwich has been a city since the 11th century.
Nottingham remains as Forest and County.
Oxford's main club in the present era is United but there is an Oxford City which has been in existence as Oxford City since 1882. Historically they were the leading club in Oxfordshire (and play in Blue and White hoops.... with their away kit being Yellow).
Peterborough remain United.
Plymouth remain Argyle
Portsmouth simply remain Portsmouth FC. [question being, if liquidated {won't happen} would Portsmouth City FC come into existance...]
Preston remain North End
Salford were founded in 1940 as Salford and presumably added in the postfix upon becoming a city in 1974.
Salisbury were founded as Salisbury FC, although a Salisbury City FC had existed between 1906 and 1911. The club officially changed name in 1993 to Salisbury City FC, although Salisbury has been a city since 1220.
Sheffield has United and Wednesday.
Swansea were previously Swansea Town so simply upgraded to City.
Southampton remain Southampton FC despite becoming a city in 1964.
Stoke has been a city since 1925. They started life as Stoke Ramblers and changed their name to Stoke City FC in 1928.
Sunderland remain AFC.
Wolverhampton remain Wanderers.
and lastly York were founded in 1908 as York City, an amateur side, then refounded in 1922 as York City.

So what does that tell us about the likelihood of us becoming Reading City FC?

It says that if we already had a postfix such as United we'd probably be safer, but most of the additions to city name are either when the name is upgraded from town or the club reformed. Name changes aren't always necessarily immediate either and a few of the more 'modern' cities haven't reflected changes upon the teams that are established at higher levels.

No one uses the city or town part of club names really. Except for the two Manchesters. If we were renamed Reading City people would still just call us Reading.

It may well be that we will beat the othe five contenders, nearest rival is Perth,to be a city.Something that has beens spoken about from years.By population alone Reading is by far the biggest town in England so what do you think. What would it mean to us?And that old chestnut, should the Royals become Reading City?

Yes to becoming a city, no to renaming the team, if we were called Reading Town maybe it would be an issue but we're Reading FC so there really isn't a need for a change.
