Inter-Forum Gamemaster!
These are the latest odds given on another forum as to the probability of a town being given CITY status this year. It seems to be decided that some award/s will be made.

I put it up as Reading are the favourites!!

Reading 8/1
Doncaster 10/1
Guildford 12/1
Middlesbrough 12/1
Omagh 12/1
Dover 12/1
Bournemouth 12/1
Luton 14/1
Colchester 14/1
Tower Hamlets 16/1
Aberystwyth 16/1
Ayr 16/1
Milton Keynes 20/1
Stockport 18/1
Coleraine 20/1
Bolton 20/1
Dorset Town 20/1
Blackpool 25/1
Croyden 25/1
Southend 25/1
Ipswich 25/1
Stevenage 25/1
Wrexham 33/1
Swindon 40/1
Goole 40/1

Are you agreed that the Queen will probably give the town city status?
Would you in fact like Reading to become a city?
What about the other names on the list?

I thought all cities had to have a cathedral or something absurd like that to officially become a city? Or have I just made that up???
Dead right sir, and that was fine for centuries back but a bit out-of-date in today's world, but there goes ...

Why Reading is a city in waiting

- Reading is the largest town in the South East, with an urban population of 213,000. It is the major urban area of the Thames Valley with a catchment of 1.7 million people and 800,000 people living within a 25 minute drive.

- Its strong links to Royalty past and present date back to the 7th Century AD and include the last resting place of King Henry I and the birthplace of a future Queen, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

- It has already this year been identified by the influential Centre for Cities as a “city to watch” and one of six cities in the country best placed to lead the UK’s recovery.

- Some of the world’s most famous companies have chosen to come to the Reading area – companies like Microsoft, Oracle Corporation, BG Group, ING, Verizon Business and Symantec.

- Reading is the social and cultural hub of the region with unrivalled transport links by road, rail and air.

I didn't make that up though, it's come from here!:

How come we have lost 19,000 since 2004?

It may well be that we will beat the othe five contenders, nearest rival is Perth,to be a city.Something that has beens spoken about from years.By population alone Reading is by far the biggest town in England so what do you think. What would it mean to us?And that old chestnut, should the Royals become Reading City?
Wouldn't Reading Town FC get the first dibs at becoming Reading City???
Good thinking,Reading City don't sound right do it?

I wouldn't worry too much about anything said in the East Anglian Daily Times. It carries about as much clout as a local weekly paper, it just happens to be a daily publication for East Anglia.

I know Jo Loverock, helped her husband in a earlier election, used to man the St Michaels School desk on election night for the Labour party. She is a lovely dedicated woman so I'd rather have her champion us then Listen to some bitter old dear from Colchester.

Not really, just a talking point, apart from the prestige of being a city....but I think we will get it this time.
