These are the latest odds given on another forum as to the probability of a town being given CITY status this year. It seems to be decided that some award/s will be made.

I put it up as Reading are the favourites!!

Reading 8/1
Doncaster 10/1
Guildford 12/1
Middlesbrough 12/1
Omagh 12/1
Dover 12/1
Bournemouth 12/1
Luton 14/1
Colchester 14/1
Tower Hamlets 16/1
Aberystwyth 16/1
Ayr 16/1
Milton Keynes 20/1
Stockport 18/1
Coleraine 20/1
Bolton 20/1
Dorset Town 20/1
Blackpool 25/1
Croyden 25/1
Southend 25/1
Ipswich 25/1
Stevenage 25/1
Wrexham 33/1
Swindon 40/1
Goole 40/1

Are you agreed that the Queen will probably give the town city status?
Would you in fact like Reading to become a city?
What about the other names on the list?

The BBC says:

Reading in Berkshire has failed to gain city status as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The new cities will be Chelmsford, Perth and St Asaph, it was announced on Wednesday.
It is the third time Reading, which had been the bookmakers' favourite to receive the honour, has missed out on gaining city status.

But in Football, Chelmesford City ALREADY exists!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelmsford_City_F.C.
They didn't even change their name overnight as it says "Chelmsford City were established in 1938 "

In any case ... St Asaph ??
Ha-ha-ha-ha, they've been quick - their Wikipedia entry now starts ...
St Asaph (Welsh: Llanelwy) is a city and community on the River Elwy in Denbighshire, Wales. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 3,491. The city of St Asaph is surrounded by countryside and views of the Vale of Clwyd. It is situated close to a number of busy coastal towns such as Rhyl, Prestatyn, Abergele, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno. The historic castles of Denbigh and Rhuddlan are also nearby.
Be careful you don't get lost amongst that huge metroplitan area ....

I don't see how that can be a city with that few people. My school has that many people. The whole thing is a farce.

They thought they were a city for years and years as they have a Cathedral. Only recently found out that they weren't technically a city! This just seems to be correcting that. Despite the law changing in the 19th Century the government still sees it necessary for cathedral towns to be cities over those places which actually have the size and infrastructure that you would expect from a city.

Still, expect to see MK and Reading upgraded in the next 15 years.

Yeah, that's understandable in the case of Chelmesford, but in the case of St Asaph (and I've nothing against the Welsh, get on with them fine!) I can say:

St Asaph - OK, 3491 Population in 2001 -

compare that to the 2010 figures for Reading:
145,700 of only the Borough population
and 232662 of urbamn population

So St Asaphs, dear souls, stand at 2.37% of the Reading Borough population
and a mere 1.50% of the Urban population

Is that justice? I think there are very serious doubts there …

St Asaph were only competing against other Welsh towns though, likewise Perth and Scottish towns.

There was always going to be one English, one Welsh and one Scottish, with a town in NI recieving a royal mayorality (i think thats the term!)
