Get Reading http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/reading-berkshire-news/george-michael-dies-goring-home-12370589 George Michael dies at home in Goring on Christmas Day Police say the 53-year-old's death is "being treated as unexplained but not suspicious" Singer George Michael has "passed away peacefully" at his home in Goring. The 53-year-old, who began his illustrious career with Wham! in the 1980s, was found dead at his house on Christmas Day. Police officers and paramedics attended the property shortly before 2pm on Sunday, December 25. Police say his death is "being treated as unexplained but not suspicious." A post mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of his death. In a statement the pop star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage." The award winning artist, who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, sold more than 80 million records worldwide during a career which spanned four decades. After early success with Wham! he went on to release solo albums such as Older, Faith and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1. Shortly before his death, it was announced that he was working on a new album with the producer Naughty Boy. Many celebrities have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the star. |

I have never been a fan of George Michael, as a singer, and certainly not of his sleazy lifestyle. But it is still another 2016 shock death. Lets hope for a kinder 2017. |

from Blackpool's BHS Forum ... Lots of reports coming out about how he gave to charities, generously and without fanfare and photo ops.... George Michael was a hugely generous philanthropist who kept secret his considerable charitable donations, it has emerged. He played a special free concert in north London for NHS nurses. Lynda Thomas, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "We are extremely grateful to George for his many large donations over the years and send our condolences to his family, friends and fans." He has also helped numerous children with donations to Childline and also supported other organisations including the Terrence Higgins Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support. Childline founder and president Dame Esther Rantzen revealed that Michael had given the royalties from his 1996 number one single Jesus To A Child to the charity. She added that he gave "millions", and helped hundreds of thousands of children through Childline. It was also revealed by author and journalist Sali Hughes that Michael offered to pay the sum he was gambling with on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. He said: "If I lose it, I'll just pay it." Hughes also told how Michael tipped a barmaid £5,000 "because she was a student nurse in debt". |

I liked him especially the two fingers stuck up to the rabid and vile press. He was a very talented man but perhaps did not achieve as much as his talents warranted. Like so many he is gone far too young |

Liz Smith died yesterday at the grand old age of 95. She was a terrific character actress. I was far more saddened by this news than I ever was about George Michael. |

Great to hear of all the stuff George Michael did anonymously inclding working with the homeless. He was by no means perfect but clearly had a lot of compassion for those with less than him. |
