The 53-year-old, who began his illustrious career with Wham! in the 1980s, was found dead at his house on Christmas Day. Police officers and paramedics attended the property shortly before 2pm on Sunday, December 25. Police say his death is "being treated as unexplained but not suspicious." A post mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of his death. In a statement the pop star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage." The award winning artist, who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, sold more than 80 million records worldwide during a career which spanned four decades. After early success with Wham! he went on to release solo albums such as Older, Faith and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1. Shortly before his death, it was announced that he was working on a new album with the producer Naughty Boy. Many celebrities have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the star. |

No offence mate. Just that I grew up with George Michael. The old girl from a sitcom I thought was awful was never going to be high on my radar. |

I wasn't struck on either really. Then again I thought the 80's was generally a dire musical decade. But that's a completely different debate
