Not exactly football pure and pure, but these photos surely shaped the lives of all at the club and the local population generally.
The majority are from the sixties, and some just before that era.
Photos are roughly in newest first, oldest last order – more or less!
It's true I dedicate this to Suffolk, William & Hayes - their interest and knowledge of the town is without question, but it's equally interesting for anyone who takes a pride in what Reading used to be like, and where it has come from!

Cheers Daib0,those sixties Broad street certainly brings back some great memories, in 1967 I moved into town from the sticks and used to spend all Saturday afternoons in and around Broad Street.By the way, anybody remember The White Hart Hotel which was on the Butts/Oxford Rd corner.Remember going to a family do there in the late fifties. All I remember was my dad had to put a little parking light on our old car parked outside. Was that compulsary in them days?

My thanks too daib0, they're great pictures which bring back some great memories.

I had one of those little parking lights for my first car. Piddling little things, clear on one side and red on the other. They used to attach to the window when it was wound up in the closed position. I think they were optional rather than compulsory.

think we just have to accept that families now move around much more than they used to - you know, two years here, three years there. I'm not old, but remember in my primary school hardly any new faces appeared in four years! So yes, people really got to know their surroundings.
Would be nice for everyone to become interested in 'Reading' but for that you need a different sort of town; some things to make it unique, and not just the shopping centres that all cities and towns have. I believe the Oracle has been good for the town, although the architecture I don't particularly like, but much more could STILL be done along the banks of the Kennet, especially from Coley to Southcote for example. The Oxford Road area could be modernized totally, maybe pedestrian from the Central swimming pool to bottom of Norcot with grass and trees where Oxford Rd is, with bars and seating areas in the streets, children's attractions, you name it.
For that it needs an inspired team of town planners, and we usually have the normal civil-servent-type plonkers who have no sense of making us different!

Here's a batch of new photos, and these first few go much farther back than I previously had found:

so here goes for the first group -

Reading – 18th Century
The Abbey Gateway
(engraving)

Reading 1791
White Knights
(ah, those were the days!)
Posted Image

Reading – mid 1800s
Broad Street in Victorian times
(just look at the most impressive imperial entrance to the ‘Arcade’!)
Posted Image

Reading 1871
Reading School
(the school had just opened - this print of the School buildings appeared in The Times). Remember that Reading FC formed at the end of this year!!

Reading about 1880
St. Mary’s Butts
(still has the ancient almshouses that were not demolished until the very end of the 1890s)
