Not exactly football pure and pure, but these photos surely shaped the lives of all at the club and the local population generally. The majority are from the sixties, and some just before that era. Photos are roughly in newest first, oldest last order – more or less! It's true I dedicate this to Suffolk, William & Hayes - their interest and knowledge of the town is without question, but it's equally interesting for anyone who takes a pride in what Reading used to be like, and where it has come from! daib0 Reading Broad Street – end of the 60s http://www.fotolibra.com/gallery/664140/broad-street-reading-england-1960s Reading Town Centre (trolley bus) - 1968 http://www.flickr.com/photos/50780708@N02/4969220184 Broad Street about 1965 http://www.francisfrith.com/reading/photos/broad-street-c1965_R13085 Friar Street, about 1965 http://www.francisfrith.com/reading/photos/friar-street-c1965_R13076 Reading Technical College about 1965 http://www.francisfrith.com/reading/photos/technical-college-c1965_R13094 Tilehurst – The White House Junction, about 1965 http://www.francisfrith.com/tilehurst/memories/tilehurst-1960s_59351 ç Tilehurst – near Tilehurst Triangle 1960s http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/561924 Reading (Southern) Station frontage in the 1960s http://www.semgonline.com/location/reading_01.html The Mod Scene in Reading – late 50s and 60s – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-12821828 (see photos by clicking on them underneath the first large picture) Caversham Bridge, about 1955 http://www.francisfrith.com/reading/photos/caversham-bridge-c1955_R13048 Tilehurst Triangle, about 1955 http://www.francisfrith.com/tilehurst/photos/the-triangle-c1955_T48020 varying old pictures going back to early 20th century … http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/berkshire/hi/people_and_places/arts_and_culture/newsid_8249000/8249338.stm Suttons Seeds – 19th century! http://www.bbc.co.uk/berkshire/features/2003/06/beer_bulbs_biscuits.shtml ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You-Tube – rare footage of Reading in the 60s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQOY13U4SOI Hope you enjoy them, my friends!! Now a group of photos from the turn of the century, up until the start of World War I: Reading 1897 The Municipal Buildings (the Town Hall, Museum etc.) ![]() Reading 1900 Corner of Broad Street and Chain Street (in this bookshop was the Post Office!) ![]() Reading 1903 near Centre of town (during the laying of the lines for the new electric Trams – which survived in service until 1939. I’m not sure the exact point here, but apparently none of the visible buildings in the photo are still standing today …) ![]() Reading 1914 The Town Hall (bracing up for World War I – this was a recruiting meeting – many of these poor folk never made it back …)

Next group - the years between the two World Wars - Reading – about 1920 Broad Street (the famous Wellsteeds’ store lies to the left – and the statue of George Palmer was later transferred to Palmer Park). Remember, THIS was the year we joined the Football League! ![]() Reading 1923 Reading Bridge (this was the testing of the new Reading Bridge to maximum strain weight – what a group of steam-rollers!) ![]() Reading 1925 Silver Street (shows the demolition of some slum cottages – now on this very site are council flats) ![]() Reading 1929 Looking northwards from St Mary’s Church Tower (smoky coal fires made the atmosphere far more smoky than today!)

Last group for the present - the 1960s ! Reading 1963 Reading Bridge (the same Reading Bridge, forty years after inauguration!) ![]() Reading – late 1960s (A) From the bottom of the Butts, looking up Southampton Street (traffic was starting to fill the centre of the town!) ![]() Reading - late 1960s (B) Reading Gaol (nothing especial of note, except the 60s cars!) ![]() Reading – late 1960s (C) Castle Street (well preserved Georgian houses) ![]() Reading - late 1960s (D) Chatham Street Car Park (when this photo was taken the car park was absolutely new!) ![]() Reading - late 1960s (E) Queen’s Road School (interesting to see that, not so many years ago Reading was rather more of an ‘industrial’ town than today!) ![]() Hope you liked them! More in the future too, this is ongoing ! |

The IDR in that part of Reading really seemed to choke the local community - got cut off from Coley, and the whole area around the Hexagon (towards the Kennet) stills seems a bit dead to me ... |

Driving up the Oxford Road today from Portman Road into town,up the IDR,Queens Rd,then Wokingham Rd,I realised what a grotty town this really is.I would move out tomorrow if I could, its a chav ghetto mid a beautiful Berkshire countryside,a blot on the landscape.
