Not exactly football pure and pure, but these photos surely shaped the lives of all at the club and the local population generally.
The majority are from the sixties, and some just before that era.
Photos are roughly in newest first, oldest last order – more or less!
It's true I dedicate this to Suffolk, William & Hayes - their interest and knowledge of the town is without question, but it's equally interesting for anyone who takes a pride in what Reading used to be like, and where it has come from!

Boarded Lane William,is it still there or was it one of those that got demolished in the late sixties?
its the magistraits courts now mate , bit ckicken comimg home lol :D
So its in the area Hexagon,IDR road ?What was behind the White Hart Hotel/The Horn area where the council office is now,I cant remember...
white hart was near reading garages in oxford st, boarded lane went from castle st to hosier, st st marys school was on the corner , to the rear of our house was parslows bread bakery , and higgs brewery , there was also some war danage ground we used to play on , you had flint st, seamer place ,wine place, the danish bacon factory in flint st , good days , wondefrul childhood ,great neighbours who cared as much as your parents did, and above all respect for others and their property, Phew got that of my chest sorry to bore younger memembers .
Your not boring anybody William, great post.If only we could go back to the sixties and start again,we would make a better fist of it then who ever planned this town!

aah, will those days one day return? You can have all the mobile tels you like, foreign hols, flash cars - but are the children any the happier for it? NO! Playing alongside a little brook, playing with pebbles in the street, going for a walk in the countryside with a sandwich and water - now that's QUALITY!

So far I've concentrated on central Reading - but I have laid my hands on numerous other old photos from Reading outer districts, Berkshire, and the Thames generally. I'm starting off anew today with photos on TILEHURST - important to many of us as ther home of the old Elm Park, plus I suspect there are more RR members currently or pastly living here than in any other suburb (at least by comments on the threads!).

So here goes, each photo with a mini description:

The Tilehurst Water Tower, taken about 2000 I think. Remember that this is officially the HIGHEST point in the whole of the Reading Borough, often making a welcome view when returning to the town eastwards along the M4:

And now, the SAME shot, but about 40 years earlier - c.1960!!

Now two photos of the Tilehurst Roebuck Hotel:

Actually, once upon a time there was a ferry across the River Thames from Tilehurst - this is how it looked:

And not far from the river was the Reading Speedway track, very popular back in the 1970s as Reading had one of the best teams in the land - I remember them challenging for the league though speedway was not my thing - this photo was from 1973:

Of course, the oldest parts of Tilehurst lie 'at the top' on a plateau - with sometimes steep hills to ascend. Here was Langley Hill in the snow, suspect it's not very old though:

You may have seen these before, but for newcomers here is the Bear Inn area - the end terminus for the No.17 buses - a couple of photos:

And you may have seen this too, but it belows to Tilehurst, and is one of my favourites - the White House crossroads. I think I would have renamed School Road the 'Tilehurst High Street' so as to give a certain 'glory' to the area!:

I will be doing other districts and villages through the season, so please occasionally drop in!!

Seeing the old speedway track takes me back.

I had a great aunt who was mad about speedway and she was a dedicated Reading speedway fan. Anders Michenek (not sure about the spelling) took her round the track on his bike for her 70th birthday.

My mother always dreamed about living on the Warren, but ... the truth is we didn't have enough money - so we ended up in Tilehurst !
