Not exactly football pure and pure, but these photos surely shaped the lives of all at the club and the local population generally.
The majority are from the sixties, and some just before that era.
Photos are roughly in newest first, oldest last order – more or less!
It's true I dedicate this to Suffolk, William & Hayes - their interest and knowledge of the town is without question, but it's equally interesting for anyone who takes a pride in what Reading used to be like, and where it has come from!

Who remembers the Tilehurst floods then?

I don't think I was around then, so it can't be that many years ago ...

who can place a date to this?

;)

Also, as Tilehurst is generally well up and off the Thames/Kennet valleys, which part might this be? The photo I found in internet, and it definitely said the "Tilehurst floods" ... ?!

Now to some photos of the area that Oxfordshire ‘robbed’ us in the 1970s – until then, centuries of being traditional Berkshire …

Abingdon – in about 1905
Posted Image

Abingdon – about 10 years later – two photos
Posted Image

Posted Image

Appleton, at about 1905
Posted Image

Bluebury, now just on the border between Berks/Oxon, but here seen at about 1910-1920
Posted Image

Two photos of East Hundred, again taken in about World War I days …
Posted Image

Posted Image

Faringdon again taken about 1910-1920 – remember that Faringdon was once the farthest point in the county from the ‘capital’ Reading – nearly 30 miles, but alas … no more is it Berks …
Posted Image

The centre of Wantage, just before the First World War
Posted Image

Now what I regard as the greatest travesty of justice of all – photos of the ‘Oxfordshire’ town of Wallingford – but once Berkshire’s COUNTY TOWN!

Wallingford Town Hall, about 1928
Posted Image

The centre of town in about 1920
Posted Image

Wallingford – the Old Lock, probably 1900-1905
Posted Image

And finally, not forgetting our very special EastStandNapz, a couple of post WW II photos of Didcot – again a town that was for centuries Berkshire:

The Broadway, in about 1955
Posted Image

And a composite of the town some five years later
Posted Image

Hope you enjoy them – more to come next month!

Here's a something a spot different -
supposedly the first beauty contest organized in Berkshire(of modern times) in 1954.

Older members, I don't know if any of you would recognize anyone, but well, what do you think about the lasses on display? -
are we improving generation by generation - I'd say so?!

Great photos Daib,my first "big" school was in Faringdon, used to bus it from Charney Bassett. We lived in a big Grange in nearby Lyford(Lyford Grange)where my dad was the Estate manager. In St James Church,Reading, near the prison, just inside the door you will find a piece about Edward Campion,he was a Catholic and when they were being persucuted a few hundred years ago he hid in The Grange in secret passages but was discovered and sent to London in chaines where he was hung, drawn and quatered! My mum had to show people around the house every so often,it was massive. Some lovely old pubs around that area selling Ushers ale.
