Not exactly football pure and pure, but these photos surely shaped the lives of all at the club and the local population generally.
The majority are from the sixties, and some just before that era.
Photos are roughly in newest first, oldest last order – more or less!
It's true I dedicate this to Suffolk, William & Hayes - their interest and knowledge of the town is without question, but it's equally interesting for anyone who takes a pride in what Reading used to be like, and where it has come from!

Daib0, the photo shown as Burghfield looks more like the Victoria at Hare Hatch to me.

I'm not being clever daib0, its just that the Victoria was run by members of my family for many years back in the forties and fifties. My Dad was raised in Hare Hatch and the Victoria was the family local.

OK, bowing to that overwhelming claim, now edited correctly! :)

Cheers Daib0,those sixties Broad street certainly brings back some great memories, in 1967 I moved into town from the sticks and used to spend all Saturday afternoons in and around Broad Street.By the way, anybody remember The White Hart Hotel which was on the Butts/Oxford Rd corner.Remember going to a family do there in the late fifties. All I remember was my dad had to put a little parking light on our old car parked outside. Was that compulsery in them days?
My thanks too daib0, they're great pictures which bring back some great memories.

I had one of those little parking lights for my first car. Piddling little things, clear on one side and red on the other. They used to attach to the window when it was wound up in the closed position. I think they were optional rather than compulsory.
Definitely not compulsory, and frankly worse than useless!

We also used to go to the White Hart for special occasions, is it still there?

I also have fond memories of hanging around the Butts Centre in the early 70's looking for girls (never found anything my mother approved of!).... good times!

It'd be fantastic if we could find photos of the Butts Centre being built, but I can't remember those days as a young schoolboy .... and what was there BEFORE??

We used to walk up to Elm Park from the station and straight past what is now the Butts Centre. Blowed if I can remember what was there before, and I must have walked past it hundreds of times.

When i was learning to drive a bus for reading council , a chap in our group "wrapped" a double dekker round the scaffolding building the butts centre. :( there were some shops on the oxford st side of where its built ,but the majority took what was a timber yard before it burnt down and became a car park ,and houses one of which i was born in . Good times . ;)

I've previously said that I consider the River Pang to be Berkshire's most beautiful river - here are a few pics to back up my claim ...
