Now all you cyclists, tell me,is there a different law for you in Reading. When you jump the lights and just miss the cars that are coming across you do you think it's funny. When you ride in the middle of the inside lane up the A33cant you see the 15ft cycle path that cost a few grand if you cared to look to your left? Another thing, those flickering lights that you got on your head like Beachy Head lighthouse,do you know that they half blind motorists coming the other way.Reading seem to have the worse cyclists in the universe, perhaps it's time the government made them pay say 50quid a year road tax.I know motorist sometime p@@s you off and they can be just as annoying to you,but come on,obey the law.

Wheelie Angry: Spanish cycle lanes put Reading to shame

I see a joined-up cycle system with large paths separated from the road complete with two way traffic and space for pedestrians

Our newest blogger Spokes Woman takes a personal look at life as a cyclist in Reading and beyond

While cycling to work every day in Reading I have to be remind myself what a pleasure my commute is. I spend some of it on a cycle path or along the river but I can’t help but moan that we still don’t have the system right or completely joined up.

Can you imagine my surprise on arriving in Menorca last week that I see a joined-up cycle system with large paths separated from the road complete with two way traffic and space for pedestrians. It was such a joy to be able to ride along feeling safe and that the route was as direct as the road, smooth and clearly signposted.

It would just be great if Reading could get it sorted. The new ReadyBike scheme has clearly been a great success as I don’t go a day without seeing groups of people using the bicycles.

I just hope that this will give reading the impetus to put more money into the cycle network.

Cyclist left for dead in hit and run on A4 speaks out

A CYCLIST who was left for dead at the side of the road in a hit and run crash has spoken out about his ordeal.

Josh Kerry was cycling back from London to see his family in Newbury when a car struck him on the A4 Bath Road near Midgham and drove off, leaving him unconscious at the side of the road. The 29-year-old has little memory of events after the smash and was found by a passer-by before being rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital where he was treated for injuries including six broken ribs and a broken cheekbone. Josh said:
“For all they knew I could have been dead on the side of the road. I would like to see someone found for this. Last thing I remember I was cycling along the road and something struck me from behind. Next thing I knew I was rolling down the ditch by the side of the road and that was it until the ambulance came round. At the hospital they said I was lucky because that is a 60mph road and the fact that someone found me is even luckier. They must have seen the flashing light on my bike but not many people walk down there so I was fortunate to have been spotted.”
Josh, a project engineer for Lambeth Council, was wearing high vis clothing when he was hit opposite the Spire Ridge Boarding Kennels and Cattery between 6pm and 7.45pm last Friday and his bike was similarly covered in bright colours to make him more visible to motorists.
He has been signed off work for 28 days and is resting up at his parents’ home in Clifton Road while he recovers. Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward and no-one has yet been arrested over the hit and run.

Reading Chronicle

Council scraps cycling lanes

"Ridiculous" cycle lanes that had been bolted onto car parking spaces have been scrapped and will cost the council £30,000 to remove. The lanes were painted next to parking bays last year and were branded "suicide alley" by cycle campaigners.

The cycle lanes on Lower Henley Road, Caversham, and Wokingham Road East Reading, were heavily criticised by cycling groups that said cyclists were at danger of being thrown from their bikes if motorists suddenly swung their doors open. In addition the width of the roads for cars was reduced.

Less than a year after being installed to give cyclists a clear area to use on the roads the Traffic Managemet Sub-Committee have voted to get rid of them.

Councillors agreed to abandon the lanes and Cllr Tony Jones citing the lanes "an accident waiting to happen". He said:
"The lanes are ridiculous really as they lull cyclists into a false sense of security."
It will cost Reading
Borough Council up to £30,000 to remove the two lanes with committee chair Cllr Tony Page stating the council has received large responses from Reading's cycling community as a result of the two schemes. He said:
" We are aware that the lanes have caused some problems for cyclists as the response we've got from them has been overwhelmingly hostile."

The committee voted in favour of removing the lanes.

Doesn't anyone think beforehand?!
