Now all you cyclists, tell me,is there a different law for you in Reading. When you jump the lights and just miss the cars that are coming across you do you think it's funny. When you ride in the middle of the inside lane up the A33cant you see the 15ft cycle path that cost a few grand if you cared to look to your left? Another thing, those flickering lights that you got on your head like Beachy Head lighthouse,do you know that they half blind motorists coming the other way.Reading seem to have the worse cyclists in the universe, perhaps it's time the government made them pay say 50quid a year road tax.I know motorist sometime p@@s you off and they can be just as annoying to you,but come on,obey the law.

Council scraps cycling lanes

"Ridiculous" cycle lanes that had been bolted onto car parking spaces have been scrapped and will cost the council £30,000 to remove. The lanes were painted next to parking bays last year and were branded "suicide alley" by cycle campaigners.

The cycle lanes on Lower Henley Road, Caversham, and Wokingham Road East Reading, were heavily criticised by cycling groups that said cyclists were at danger of being thrown from their bikes if motorists suddenly swung their doors open. In addition the width of the roads for cars was reduced.

Less than a year after being installed to give cyclists a clear area to use on the roads the Traffic Managemet Sub-Committee have voted to get rid of them.

Councillors agreed to abandon the lanes and Cllr Tony Jones citing the lanes "an accident waiting to happen". He said:
"The lanes are ridiculous really as they lull cyclists into a false sense of security."
It will cost Reading
Borough Council up to £30,000 to remove the two lanes with committee chair Cllr Tony Page stating the council has received large responses from Reading's cycling community as a result of the two schemes. He said:
" We are aware that the lanes have caused some problems for cyclists as the response we've got from them has been overwhelmingly hostile."

The committee voted in favour of removing the lanes.

Doesn't anyone think beforehand?!

Ah yes, yet another example of the incompetence that is RBC.

Shocking photo shows man riding his bike - on the M4

Cyclist was riding in the hard shoulder on the M4

Posted Image

This remarkable photo shows the staggering moment a motorist snapped a picture of a man riding his cycle - down the hard shoulder of the M4. Eagle-eyed motorist Ben Wickens was in stationary traffic when he saw the man cycle past, apparently without a care in the world. He said he couldn't believe his eyes and that's no surprise - the Highway Code, and common sense, state it is illegal to cycle on a motorway.

Thames Valley Police has since issued a warning to those who are thinking copying the cyclist.

Under Rule 253 of the Highway Code - entitled Prohibited Vehicles - it states motorways must not be used by the following:
•pedestrians
•holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences
•riders of motorcycles under 50 cc
•cyclists
•horse riders
•certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission)
•agricultural vehicles
•powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters

Police added cycling on motorways can have fatal consequences. Only last month, a cyclist died on the M40 after being hit by a lorry. The 23-year-old man from Egham in Surrey, was struck at around 3.50am on Monday, July 13. He died in the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford the following Wednesday.

Think THAT's bad?

Where I am in China (and, therefore, all over China I'm sure), I regularly see cars use the hard shoulder as an additional lane whilst going at full speed. I've been in taxis where they've done this and been terrified. One of those times, someone with me could tell him to not do it so he pulled back into the regular lanes, thankfully. They do this even when going round blind bends. It's utter insanity. It's as though they don't understand what a hard shoulder is for and assume they will never encounter a stopped vehicle. Meanwhile, I've seen cars stopped in the hard shoulder all the time.

Also, over here, cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, even cars, I have seen going the wrong way down one way roads (multi-laned highways). No one gets mad at them either. They don't ever bat an eye. No one gets mad at each other for dangerous driving AT all. They ALL do it and so they don't care when someone else does. Oncoming car? Pull out in front of them. They'll stop, probably.

Reading Broad Street support for cycling ban lift

A cycling ban in a pedestrianised shopping street in Reading is set to be lifted after consultation results showed strong support for the idea. It comes after hire bike racks were added to Broad Street West, even though that stretch of road currently has a cycling ban. However, cycling has not been banned in the east part of Broad Street.

Out of 1,283 responses, 796 were in favour of the ban in the west half being lifted. Other results of the informal online consultation showed 448 in favour of not allowing cycling in Broad Street at all and 39 opting for no change to the current arrangements.

Reading Borough Council transport head Tony Page said: "I don't believe the current situation where cycling is allowed in one half of Broad Street and banned in the other is sensible."

Councillors will now be asked to approve a formal public consultation at a traffic management committee meeting on 14 January.
