Now all you cyclists, tell me,is there a different law for you in Reading. When you jump the lights and just miss the cars that are coming across you do you think it's funny. When you ride in the middle of the inside lane up the A33cant you see the 15ft cycle path that cost a few grand if you cared to look to your left? Another thing, those flickering lights that you got on your head like Beachy Head lighthouse,do you know that they half blind motorists coming the other way.Reading seem to have the worse cyclists in the universe, perhaps it's time the government made them pay say 50quid a year road tax.I know motorist sometime p@@s you off and they can be just as annoying to you,but come on,obey the law.

I'm sure Hayes will be delighted with the latest from BBC Local News A disused railway viaduct has been officially reopened as part of a cycle route linking Southampton and Reading. The route runs over the 33-arch Hockley Viaduct alongside the M3 at Winchester. It was last used by trains in the mid 1960s. Olympic gold medal cyclist Dani King performed the opening ceremony. It completes the Sustrans National Cycle Network link from the south coast and follows a 30-year campaign by the Friends of Hockley Viaduct. Julia Sanderson of the group said the reopening was "wonderful after so many years". London 2012 team pursuit cyclist King, who lives in Hampshire, said: "It means a lot to me to get more people on bikes and keeping fit and healthy locally. It's great to have such a long cycle route off-road." The £1m repair of the 123-year-old structure included repairing brickwork and laying a concrete deck. The work was funded by Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council as well as the Sustrans charity. The opening allows cyclists to ride the 77-mile (123km) route between Southampton and Reading in about 10 hours. |

Just picking up on Mike's point about the A33 Cycle path; I use this every day as it is my route to work, but that in itself is dangerous. As you come away from town, the first turning off the A33 is for the two car dealerships. Now, obviously the Cycle route includes any juctions along the way, but the ammount of inconsiderate drivers who come flying round this corner, just to cut out the lights is unreal! Most of them fail to indicate and I personally have had a number of near misses because some moron is too stupid or lazy just to flick on their little orange blinker. There may be a high proportion of idiotic Cyclists in Reading, but a garantee there are a lot more pratts in cars. |

Just so Hayes realizes I still care for him ... Get Reading Reading Bridge cycle lane plan angers town's Tories A proposal by cycling lobbyists to close a traffic lane to make way for cyclists on Reading Bridge has been slammed by the town’s Conservative councillors. They say the idea has not been consulted on and will, if implemented, inevitably cause congestion. And the plan would also pre-empt the project – backed by government money and due to begin fairly soon – to build a new bridge just for cyclists and pedestrians over the River Thames between the two bridges (see above). But council transport supremo Tony Page said there was no plan to make any changes to Reading’s two existing bridges before the new bridge was built. The suggestion for the new cycle lanes was reported at the Reading Borough Council cycle forum on Thursday. It described how one lane could be coned off southbound in order to assess the impact on existing traffic flows, before removing the lane permanently to install a cycle lane in each direction. Conservative transport lead, Councillor Richard Willis, expressed concerns even though the measure was supported by the cycling groups. Speaking afterwards he said: “I understand that Reading Bridge is a dangerous route for cyclists but there is already a shared cycle lane on one of the pavements and the Labour administration is also proceeding with our plans for a new pedestrian/cycle bridge over the Thames, between the two existing bridges. The money for the new bridge has been provided by central Government and the planning is now well advanced. There is therefore no need to reduce the capacity on the existing bridge and cause inevitable further congestion and tailbacks.” Tory group leader Cllr Tim Harris, said: “The Conservative group has been consistently supportive of improvements for cyclists in Reading but this is not the way to do it. The Conservative proposals for a new pedestrian/cycle bridge are coming forward and this bridge will deliver benefits for all without causing unnecessary traffic congestion”. However, deputy leader of the council Cllr Tony Page said there was ‘absolutely no plan to cone-off a lane on Reading Bridge’ or introduce any changes to either Reading or Caversham Bridges until after the new cycle and footbridge was built. He said it would be foolish to start ‘mucking about with the bridges now’ when the new foot and cycle bridge was ‘a given’, which should attract thousands of cycle and pedestrian journeys every day. Well good for the Tories ,the last thing it wants is a political correct cycle lane, why not put one for Lesbians,Muslims and Sikh s while they are at it.When they start paying road tax these loud mouth cycle lobbies can have a say.So get off your bike and walk over. |
