The Hexagon – a good invention?; 35th Anniversary in 2012

The Hexagon opened in 1977. That means we are approaching the 35th anniversary
as I write this. The Hexagon is a multi-purpose arts venue and theatre with a capacity of 1,200 in central Reading, Berkshire, England.
Its design team was headed by the firm of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall & Partners, who also designed the adjacent civic offices
and police station. It came about because it was felt that the Old Reading Town Hall lacked both capacity size
and facilities for the more modern productions.

It is, of course, named for its distinctive shape; however, there was originally a Reading citizen competition to decide the name
but I suppose the result was never in doubt!

Events include classical music, comedy, dance, drama, pop and rock concerts. The venue has also been used for snooker
(my dear old mum won a Reading Evening Post competition some years back, and got free tickets and a photo with Steve Davis published
if I remember correctly).

So, looking back over a thirty-five year period –

has it been a good thing for the town?
And for younger members – are you happy with the programming today?
If not, what would you include there instead?

Seen Squeeze, The Temptations and The Bootleg Beetles there among others. Its always seemed fit for purpose, if not a tad fugly!
Hawkwind,XTC,Chas and Dave,Oscar Peterson,MaxBygraves and Giant Haystacks.
Wow, that is a truly diverse list of names, and each and every one of them an absolute legend :D

Thought I'd bring this back up as I went to the Hexagon last night to see Bill Bailey's Qualmpeddler show, brilliant and hilarious show, some of the musical stuff Bill Bailey does is so inspired, but I wanted to say that on being the first actually memorable time I've been I can say that the view isn't great, but the seats are comfortable even if there isn't much leg room. Very unusual building, don't think its a particularly good design for a theatre if I'm honest.

I knew a bloke who once told his wife he was going away on a course with his work for a couple of days. What he was really doing was going to the Hexagon to watch the world snooker tournament, and stay at his mates for a couple of nights.

He'd have got away with it too if his wife hadn't switched the telly on during the day and spotted him sitting in the crowd :D :D :D

My mum won tickets for the snooker there in a Reading Evening Post competition!

would be good to return, but I've lost the 'right' contacts, and they're what counts ("it's not who you know, but how you know them" :) ). Once played a solo lunchtime concert, and another time did a 45 minute solo accompanied by orchestra. As an ordinary member of orchestras I played there dozens of times since it opened till the 90s...
