WORLD CUP 2014 QUALIFYING:

MOLDOVA V ENGLAND

Venue: Zimbru Stadium, Chisinau
Date: Friday, 7 September
Kick-off: 1945 BST
Coverage: Listen on BBC Radio 5 live; text commentary on the BBC Sport website

England's record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton has written off the current national side's chances of success at the 2014 World Cup. England begin their qualifying campaign for the tournament in Brazil with a match in Moldova on Friday.

But 1966 World Cup winner Charlton, 74, believes Roy Hodgson's side are "a way off" competing for trophies again.
"They haven't got a lot of top-quality players so you must feel it is going to be difficult to win things," he said. "You cannot see it happening in Brazil at the next World Cup, for instance. Perhaps, if the right group of players come together and stay together for a while and gel into a team, with the right manager, then perhaps it might happen, but I have to be honest and say it's a way off. Since the European Union and the influx of so many foreign players, there is a definite shortage of English players from which the England manager can select, it has become far more difficult. I feel sorry for the England manager, whoever he is, as he simply doesn't have enough players to choose from."

Charlton's stance differs from his assertion ahead of England's last-eight clash with Italy at Euro 2012, when he claimed Hodgson's side could win the tournament. Italy ended up winning that game 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in Kiev.

Many believe that England's hopes of success lie with Wayne Rooney, who has struggled to shoulder such expectation since excelling in his first major international tournament - the 2004 European Championships in Portugal, in which they were knocked out by the hosts in the quarter-finals.

Charlton agrees that Rooney is important to England's chances of success and backed the Manchester United player to break his international scoring record of 49 goals if he is utilised properly. Rooney, 26, has 29 international goals to his name but will not add to that tally against either Moldova or Ukraine the following week as he is sidelined for a month after suffering a gash on his right leg during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Fulham.

"It is up to the England manager to find a way of bringing the best out of him at international level, and how best to handle him," added Charlton. "He is handled very well at Manchester United, and I am sure it will evolve with England and if that is the case I feel sure that Wayne is the player most capable of breaking my record of 49 goals, which has stood the test of time. If anyone is going to get the record then it's going to be Wayne Rooney. He's good enough and he is still young enough. No matter how much I might like being the top goalscorer, I will be pleased when someone breaks it, particularly if it's Wayne. I would congratulate them. It is certainly a record to treasure."

Ashley Cole to miss England's World Cup tie in Moldova
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19460608

Ashley Cole will miss England's World Cup qualifying match in Moldova on Friday because of an ankle injury. The Chelsea left-back, 31, returned to his club shortly after joining up with Roy Hodgson's squad. Cole's injury is described as "minor" and he will be assessed on Sunday to see if he can play in next Tuesday's qualifier against Ukraine.

Fellow defender John Terry was able to take full part in training on Monday, untroubled by a recent neck strain. Terry, 31, missed Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Newcastle on 25 August and the 4-1 Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid on Friday. But he did not look in any discomfort as he headed several balls during the session of more than an hour at London Colney.

Captain Steven Gerrard, Danny Welbeck, Glen Johnson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley were restricted to gym work after playing for their clubs on Sunday.

Manager Hodgson said England would not underestimate the Moldovans, who finished second bottom of their Euro 2012 qualifying group but performed creditably against the Netherlands in a pair of 1-0 defeats. "I don't care if they are called Moldova," said Hodgson. "As far as I'm concerned, they could be called Brazil and we have to produce a performance to win us the game."

Striker Andy Carroll has already withdrawn from the squad with a hamstring injury. The 23-year-old striker, who joined West Ham on a season-long loan on Friday, withdrew from the squad on Saturday after picking up a hamstring injury in the 3-0 win over Fulham. Hodgson, who was at St Mary's as Manchester United came from behind to beat Southampton 3-2 on Sunday, waited until the weekend's Premier League programme had concluded before deciding not to replace Carroll. Arsenal's Theo Walcott, who has been named in the squad as a midfielder, is likely to provide attacking cover. Leighton Baines started England's 2-1 win over Itay in August at left-back, where he was replaced with 12 minutes remaining by Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand, also in the squad for Moldova and Ukraine.

Had Cole played in both matches, he would have won his 100th cap against Ukraine, having made his debut against Albania in March 2001. England's road to Brazil 2014 begins at the Zimbru Stadium in Chisnau before Hodgson's men face Ukraine four days later at Wembley.

SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Sunderland), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).

West Ham striker Andy Carroll has been ruled out for between five and six weeks with a hamstring injury. The 23-year-old withdrew from England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine after limping off 68 minutes into his debut against Fulham. A scan has revealed that Carroll's hamstring injury is serious, ruling him out of one Capital One Cup and four Premier League games.

Leighton Baines believes Roy Hodgson's relaxed managerial approach will bring the best out of England. Everton defender Baines thinks there is less tension around the squad, compared to the "stiffer" regime of previous coach Fabio Capello. The left-back, 27, is set for his first start in a competitive international because of Ashley Cole's ankle problem.

"He's definitely relaxed us all and there's been a shift in people's mentality," he told BBC Radio 5 live. "When you're around the place you are definitely more relaxed and enjoy each other's company a bit more. It was maybe a bit stiffer before that, for whatever reason. Roy's definitely come in and had a positive influence in that manner."

Baines also says he thinks it is easier for Hodgson to communicate his ideas than it was for his Italian predecessor, something that is an important factor in the new set-up's positive atmosphere. Baines added: "The main one is that he's an English manager and it's a lot easier for him to get his points across to the players and deliver the messages that he wants. Now he's had some more time with the squad as well, it's given us more of a chance to implement those ideas on the training pitch and hopefully we'll see that out on the pitch in games as well."

Defender Gary Cahill, who missed Euro 2012 after sustaining a double fracture to his jaw, could also be set to feature. The Chelsea man believes that missing the tournament, in which England went out in the quarter-finals, has left him with plenty of work to do to force his way into Hodgson's plans, with John Terry, Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott also in contention.

He said: "I think me not making the Euros has made this harder in one way. I thought the lads did really well at the Euros so for me not being able to stamp my authority in that tournament has come back and made it another fight for me to try to get back involved and get the starting place. There's great competition and 'Jags' [Jagielka] scored against Italy, Joleon had a great Euros and 'JT' is obviously well known and proven for many years."

So what do we think about the score for tonight, I'm going for Moldova 1 - 3 England. Moldova have scored in 7 of their last 8 games and we're boand to let one in, but overall, I think we'll dominate.
