WORLD CUP 2014 QUALIFYING:

MOLDOVA V ENGLAND

Venue: Zimbru Stadium, Chisinau
Date: Friday, 7 September
Kick-off: 1945 BST
Coverage: Listen on BBC Radio 5 live; text commentary on the BBC Sport website

England's record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton has written off the current national side's chances of success at the 2014 World Cup. England begin their qualifying campaign for the tournament in Brazil with a match in Moldova on Friday.

But 1966 World Cup winner Charlton, 74, believes Roy Hodgson's side are "a way off" competing for trophies again.
"They haven't got a lot of top-quality players so you must feel it is going to be difficult to win things," he said. "You cannot see it happening in Brazil at the next World Cup, for instance. Perhaps, if the right group of players come together and stay together for a while and gel into a team, with the right manager, then perhaps it might happen, but I have to be honest and say it's a way off. Since the European Union and the influx of so many foreign players, there is a definite shortage of English players from which the England manager can select, it has become far more difficult. I feel sorry for the England manager, whoever he is, as he simply doesn't have enough players to choose from."

Charlton's stance differs from his assertion ahead of England's last-eight clash with Italy at Euro 2012, when he claimed Hodgson's side could win the tournament. Italy ended up winning that game 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in Kiev.

Many believe that England's hopes of success lie with Wayne Rooney, who has struggled to shoulder such expectation since excelling in his first major international tournament - the 2004 European Championships in Portugal, in which they were knocked out by the hosts in the quarter-finals.

Charlton agrees that Rooney is important to England's chances of success and backed the Manchester United player to break his international scoring record of 49 goals if he is utilised properly. Rooney, 26, has 29 international goals to his name but will not add to that tally against either Moldova or Ukraine the following week as he is sidelined for a month after suffering a gash on his right leg during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Fulham.

"It is up to the England manager to find a way of bringing the best out of him at international level, and how best to handle him," added Charlton. "He is handled very well at Manchester United, and I am sure it will evolve with England and if that is the case I feel sure that Wayne is the player most capable of breaking my record of 49 goals, which has stood the test of time. If anyone is going to get the record then it's going to be Wayne Rooney. He's good enough and he is still young enough. No matter how much I might like being the top goalscorer, I will be pleased when someone breaks it, particularly if it's Wayne. I would congratulate them. It is certainly a record to treasure."

So what do we think about the score for tonight, I'm going for Moldova 1 - 3 England. Moldova have scored in 7 of their last 8 games and we're boand to let one in, but overall, I think we'll dominate.

Penalty a bit fortunate I think, but we'll take 1-0 up after 3 minutes no matter how we get it I suppose :)

Also, now 4.5 minutes gone and two cards already, 1 each

Well then, Moldova clearly the Accrington Stanley of international football, they were simply clueless, some of their players playing in second division in Isreal I heard, so you don't have to do much to play international football with Moldova! I could probably claim I'm from Moldova and fill in, that's how poor and pedestrian they were, but what do you expect from a small landlocked sparsely populated country where football is not really on the agenda. England were good in the first half, average in the second, promising start to what will be yet another pointless world cup for us where we scrape through the group stage and get knocked out on penalties to the Germans. Again.

BBC Sport Match Report

England's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign opened in emphatic fashion as Moldova were outclassed in Chisinau. Roy Hodgson's side were three goals up at the interval as Frank Lampard scored an early penalty and headed a second before Jermain Defoe was on target. England were kept waiting until 16 minutes from time before James Milner added a fourth, while Leighton Baines also scored his first international goal after his free-kick took a massive deflection.

It was a victory that was every bit as emphatic as the 5-0 scoreline suggests. Manchester United's Tom Cleverley impressed on his first competitive start and Lampard demonstrated his continued worth at international level in a performance that was little more than a stroll once England swiftly exerted their obvious authority. The display and result must be placed in the context that was it was against a side that looked every bit their Fifa world ranking of 141 - but England completed the job with efficiency to record their biggest away win in 19 years.

Hodgson may actually feel England could have scored even more but this was the perfect first step on the road to Rio in 2014 and the ideal platform for the second qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley on Tuesday. Cleverley was a central figure as England took the lead inside three minutes. He saw his shot handled by Moldovan defender Simion Bulgaru and Lampard drilled home the penalty in trademark fashion.

The action was all heading one way and the Moldova keeper was having an adventurous evening. Defoe turned an effort wide at the near post before forcing a fine low save from Stanislav Namasco, who also rescued his own handling error by blocking Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

England were graphically illustrating the huge gulf in class between the sides and it was no surprise when Lampard added the second just before the half hour. Steven Gerrard found his Liverpool team-mate Glen Johnson and Lampard arrived in the area with perfect timing to glide a header beyond Namasco.

If Moldova harboured even the slightest hopes of pulling off a comeback that would have bordered on miraculous given their lack of quality, they were snuffed out 13 minutes before the break when Oxlade-Chamberlain picked his way through midfield before releasing Defoe for a finish that should have been dealt with more convincingly by Namasco at his near post.

Moldova did give England's under-employed keeper Joe Hart a worrying moment when Igor Armas sent a free header wide but otherwise it was an easy night. Gerrard was replaced by Michael Carrick at the start of the second half and a sloppy passage of play followed in which England struggled to recapture the momentum and rhythm of their earlier work. Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck were introduced for Oxlade-Chamberlain and Defoe - and both were involved in the build-up which led to Milner's powerful, low finish after 74 minutes. As Moldova understandably tired after a night of ball chasing, Everton left-back Baines scored his first international goal as his deflected free-kick totally wrong-footed Namasco. John Terry then limped off injured with what looked an ankle problem which may make him doubtful to face Ukraine. It was the final act of a painful evening for Moldova in Chisinau and a highly satisfactory one for England.

England match facts

•This was England's biggest away win since San Marino were beaten 7-1 in November 1993

•England have been awarded exactly 100 penalties. Frank Lampard is responsible for 12% of the 69 scored

•The last time England scored five goals in an away international was in a 5-1 win in Germany in 2001

Now on to the Ukraine!

Scotland 0 Serbia 0

Scotland and Serbia fought out a disappointing draw, with both sides severely lacking in inspiration. Allan McGregor saved well from Aleksandar Kolarov's early free kick and did brilliantly to block Dusan Tadic's effort in the last minute.

The Scots' best opportunities fell to Kenny Miller, but the striker was unable to take any of them. Steven Naismith and Robert Snodgrass also went close and James Forrest was denied in stoppage time.

But a victory would have flattered the Scots, who struggled at times to break down the Serbian defence.

It leaves Craig Levein's side desperately needing a win over Macedonia on Tuesday, with World Cup qualifying group A rivals Belgium and Croatia having picked up wins against Wales and Macedonia, respectively, on Friday.
