WORLD CUP 2014 QUALIFYING: MOLDOVA V ENGLAND Venue: Zimbru Stadium, Chisinau Date: Friday, 7 September Kick-off: 1945 BST Coverage: Listen on BBC Radio 5 live; text commentary on the BBC Sport website England's record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton has written off the current national side's chances of success at the 2014 World Cup. England begin their qualifying campaign for the tournament in Brazil with a match in Moldova on Friday. But 1966 World Cup winner Charlton, 74, believes Roy Hodgson's side are "a way off" competing for trophies again. "They haven't got a lot of top-quality players so you must feel it is going to be difficult to win things," he said. "You cannot see it happening in Brazil at the next World Cup, for instance. Perhaps, if the right group of players come together and stay together for a while and gel into a team, with the right manager, then perhaps it might happen, but I have to be honest and say it's a way off. Since the European Union and the influx of so many foreign players, there is a definite shortage of English players from which the England manager can select, it has become far more difficult. I feel sorry for the England manager, whoever he is, as he simply doesn't have enough players to choose from." Charlton's stance differs from his assertion ahead of England's last-eight clash with Italy at Euro 2012, when he claimed Hodgson's side could win the tournament. Italy ended up winning that game 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in Kiev. Many believe that England's hopes of success lie with Wayne Rooney, who has struggled to shoulder such expectation since excelling in his first major international tournament - the 2004 European Championships in Portugal, in which they were knocked out by the hosts in the quarter-finals. Charlton agrees that Rooney is important to England's chances of success and backed the Manchester United player to break his international scoring record of 49 goals if he is utilised properly. Rooney, 26, has 29 international goals to his name but will not add to that tally against either Moldova or Ukraine the following week as he is sidelined for a month after suffering a gash on his right leg during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Fulham. "It is up to the England manager to find a way of bringing the best out of him at international level, and how best to handle him," added Charlton. "He is handled very well at Manchester United, and I am sure it will evolve with England and if that is the case I feel sure that Wayne is the player most capable of breaking my record of 49 goals, which has stood the test of time. If anyone is going to get the record then it's going to be Wayne Rooney. He's good enough and he is still young enough. No matter how much I might like being the top goalscorer, I will be pleased when someone breaks it, particularly if it's Wayne. I would congratulate them. It is certainly a record to treasure." WORLD CUP 2014 QUALIFYING ENGLAND V UKRAINE Venue: Wembley Stadium, London Date: Tuesday, 11 September Kick-off: 20:00 BST Coverage: Listen on BBC Radio 5 live; text commentary on the BBC Sport website Team News Left-back Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday night with an ankle injury. Cole missed the 5-0 win in Moldova on Friday and has not recovered. Chelsea team-mate John Terry is also a doubt after twisting his ankle during the win in Chisinau. An FA statement said: "Ashley Cole was assessed by the medical staff on Saturday and will not be available for the qualifier with Ukraine on Tuesday." Terry, 31, played on in Moldova despite picking up the injury and is receiving treatment. After the match on Friday, England manager Roy Hodgson said: "My only concern is the injury to John Terry. I don't think it's a very serious injury, but Tuesday is very close. I will have to wait and see what the doctors tell me." With England having used their three substitutes, but cruising to the win in Friday's Group H World Cup qualifier, Hodgson offered Terry the opportunity to come off for the final 20 minutes. But the Chelsea defender decided to continue as England saw out the victory. "I'd like to have taken him off, and we did suggest we'd play with 10," said Hodgson. "He's a warrior though, so he poo-pooed the suggestion. He took a kick on the ankle in the first half and then twisted it slightly when he landed in front of the bench in the second half. They're assessing him at the moment. It's obviously not a very serious injury, but every knock is important with only three days between games." Hodgson has defenders Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill available if Terry is ruled out, while Leighton Baines will continue at left-back after scoring England's fifth with a deflected free-kick. Captain Steven Gerrard was taken off at half-time but is fine and will start at Wembley. |

As expected, this game against the Ukraine is proving far tougher than Moldova. England are playing some good possession football though. |

Uninteresting game though, international football is 90% of the time very dull and not worth watching, but we watch it anyway to see England's latest mishaps and missed chances and miraculously bad luck at times. Truly is remarkable. Bit like Spurs in the Premier League, no nation has ever imploded or had a major decision go against them, only thing worth watching these games for. Apart from how much better Spain are than everyone else
