Jackson's of Reading set to close after 137 years trading BBC News A department store founded in Reading in 1875 is facing closure because of the cost of maintaining the building and a drop in trade. Jackson's has been trading for 137 years and still uses pneumatic pipes to transport cash around the building. Managing director Brian Carter said retail had changed significantly and the store now had to cope with competition from the internet and large centres like the Oracle. The 60 staff employed by Jackson's will now have to wait to see if the economic situation improves to save it from closure. A shame, isn't it?! |

I can't remember the Wokingham one but do remember the one in Bracknell. Thats when Bracknell consisted of a high street and not much else. In the late 60's we all used to pile into the Catherine Wheel on a Thursday night to watch Star Trek in colour. |

Now I know its a little bit out of the Reading catchment area, but with your association with Henley Mike, did you ever go to Chez Skinners nightclub at the top of White Hill? |

A.E Hobbs. I remembering when that opened as a brand new pub in the 60's. Its long gone now. Knocked down to make way for new houses. Their speciality was known as plank meals. Basically the same menu as anywhere else but served on a sort of bread board with a groove all around the outside to catch the gravy. Seemed quite trendy at the time but sounds a bit grim looking back. Health and Safety would have a field day if anyone tried it today! |

Shouldn't say this but we went into a pub one evening ,could be called the Red Cow?its on the left has you come in from Reading right into the town centre, just a way before the traffic lights. One night a few of us from Reading found the front door key,the only way in,and locked the door and put it down a drain, god knows what happened ,seem funny at the time

The queen Victoria at Hare Hatch was the pub I can remember sitting outside, in the little porch, with my cousins while our Mums and Dads and grandparents were inside having a good time. What made it better for them was that the pub was run by a member of the family. Great days, but you'd get done for child neglect these days if you left kids outside a pub with a cola and a bag of crisps. |
