This is the first impression of a new bridge which will allow cyclists and pedestrians to take a more direct path from Caversham to the town centre.![]() The landmark over the Thames will cross the river east of Fry’s Island and be similar to the new bridge over Junction 11 of the M4. A planning application is due to be submitted by the council in June to go before the planning committee in September. Although this is broadly what the bridge from Christchurch Meadows will look like, its ultimate appearance will be subject to final decisions by planners. The new bridge is proposed to cross the river east of Fry’s Island, between Caversham and Reading Bridges, and the public are to be consulted on the proposal in advance of a planning application, which will be submitted in June. The structure will be a similar design to the one the council built over Junction 11 of the M4. It will provide a new link for pedestrians and cyclists across the Thames and into the town centre. On the north side of the river, the bridge would link to the existing footpath running through Christchurch Meadows. To the south, it would link to an improved riverside foot and cycle path, which would lead users via Norman Place to a new crossing in Vastern Road. The route would then connect through to the new northern entrance of the railway station and the recently-opened pedestrian subway under Reading Station. It would then provide a new through-route from Caversham to the town centre. The image of the bridge released by the council is what the proposed crossing could look like, but there could be modifications during the planning process. The new bridge will be funded through Reading Borough Council’s successful £20.7million Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) bid, which aims to create an additional 7,200 daily bus trips, 12,050 daily walking trips and 2,300 daily cycle trips across the town, while cutting congestion by up to 10 per cent. Other parts of the project include expanded park and ride facilities, working with neighbouring boroughs, and a bike hire scheme for Reading along with a range of other initiatives. Tony Page, Reading’s lead councillor for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “This exciting proposal underlines our commitment to strengthen north/south links across the Thames. It will encourage many more pedestrians and cyclists to use an attractive and safer route into and from the town centre, and should prove to be a popular alternative to the existing Caversham and Reading Bridges.” Conservative transport spokes-man Cllr Richard Willis said: “I welcome the fact the new pedestrian/cycle bridge is going ahead. This was an idea in the Conservative 2008 Transport manifesto and something which I progressed when we ran the council in 2010/11. It will add a much needed facility replacing the existing poor route across Reading Bridge, and I hope that it will be a further demonstration of a commitment to improve cycling infrastructure in the town.” The last time a crossing was built over the River Thames in Reading was Reading Bridge in 1923. Any comments or queries can be emailed to transport@reading.gov.uk. All responses need to be submitted by May 18. You can also comment on the council website at www.reading.gov.uk/council/consultations. |

All very well for cyclist ,no doubt the road tax they pay will fund it .But what is wanted is a new Motorway to go from the M4 at Reading to join the M40 via Oxford.it could go the West side of Pangebourne crossing the Thames then across the East side of Didcot and join up between the Oxford and Bicester junctions. |

I thought this was going to be about a third road bridge. If you look at this map, you can see that the A329(0)M basically comes to a halt. It was always my understanding that a bridge would eventually cross the river here. http://goo.gl/maps/5Sih7 |

Third Thames bridge petition gains 300 signatures after floods close Sonning Adele Harbor has created the on-line petition to highlight the desperate need for a bridge to connect the A329M to Caversham A Caversham woman's petition for a third Thames bridge to be build has gained more than 300 signatures. Adele Harbor has created the on-line petition to highlight the desperate need for a bridge to connect the A329M to Caversham. Reading East MP Rob Wilson, Reading Borough Council and Oxfordshire County Council are the targets for the petition. Ms Harbor was prompted to take action after flooding closed Sonning Bridge which resulted in traffic chaos in Caversham and the rest of the town. She says; "The amount of traffic that flows through Caversham and Reading each day is enormous and when problems arise not only does it create economic problems when delivery lorries can not get to where they need to be on time but it also causes frustration to those who live in and around Reading. If a third bridge was built it would dramatically ease congestion and have a positive economic impact too with local business being able to receive their deliveries on time too, leading to happy customers." This would be a logical location for a third vehicular crossing but has been resisted for decades by OCC. The argument is presumably that any new crossing would lead to an upgraded road network north of the river that would in turn lead to pressure for increased residential development in that area. Before you know it, Shiplake would become part of Greater Reading and all of those beautiful villages between Caversham and Henley would also be under threat. |

Logical Chris, across the Thames at Suttons Park,By Pass Henley ,that would relieve the traffic in the town, then north of Benson ,cross country to Oxford linking up with the A34 near Boars Hill.Take the traffic away from the Woodcote Road avoiding the thirteen bends of death.Pipedream I know but its crying out for it. |
