This is the first impression of a new bridge which will allow cyclists and pedestrians to take a more direct path from Caversham to the town centre.![]() The landmark over the Thames will cross the river east of Fry’s Island and be similar to the new bridge over Junction 11 of the M4. A planning application is due to be submitted by the council in June to go before the planning committee in September. Although this is broadly what the bridge from Christchurch Meadows will look like, its ultimate appearance will be subject to final decisions by planners. The new bridge is proposed to cross the river east of Fry’s Island, between Caversham and Reading Bridges, and the public are to be consulted on the proposal in advance of a planning application, which will be submitted in June. The structure will be a similar design to the one the council built over Junction 11 of the M4. It will provide a new link for pedestrians and cyclists across the Thames and into the town centre. On the north side of the river, the bridge would link to the existing footpath running through Christchurch Meadows. To the south, it would link to an improved riverside foot and cycle path, which would lead users via Norman Place to a new crossing in Vastern Road. The route would then connect through to the new northern entrance of the railway station and the recently-opened pedestrian subway under Reading Station. It would then provide a new through-route from Caversham to the town centre. The image of the bridge released by the council is what the proposed crossing could look like, but there could be modifications during the planning process. The new bridge will be funded through Reading Borough Council’s successful £20.7million Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) bid, which aims to create an additional 7,200 daily bus trips, 12,050 daily walking trips and 2,300 daily cycle trips across the town, while cutting congestion by up to 10 per cent. Other parts of the project include expanded park and ride facilities, working with neighbouring boroughs, and a bike hire scheme for Reading along with a range of other initiatives. Tony Page, Reading’s lead councillor for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “This exciting proposal underlines our commitment to strengthen north/south links across the Thames. It will encourage many more pedestrians and cyclists to use an attractive and safer route into and from the town centre, and should prove to be a popular alternative to the existing Caversham and Reading Bridges.” Conservative transport spokes-man Cllr Richard Willis said: “I welcome the fact the new pedestrian/cycle bridge is going ahead. This was an idea in the Conservative 2008 Transport manifesto and something which I progressed when we ran the council in 2010/11. It will add a much needed facility replacing the existing poor route across Reading Bridge, and I hope that it will be a further demonstration of a commitment to improve cycling infrastructure in the town.” The last time a crossing was built over the River Thames in Reading was Reading Bridge in 1923. Any comments or queries can be emailed to transport@reading.gov.uk. All responses need to be submitted by May 18. You can also comment on the council website at www.reading.gov.uk/council/consultations. |

Surely this bridge has to go ahead? The bottlenecks are only going to get worse otherwise. |

BBC News - Berkshire Name confirmed for Reading's £5.9m new Thames bridge A new cycle and pedestrian bridge across the River Thames at Reading has been named after a public vote. The £5.9m Christchurch Bridge opened in September and links Caversham with Reading Station and the town centre. The name was chosen from a shortlist and announced at a council meeting on Tuesday. Four suggestions were shortlisted following an informal public consultation which received 342 responses. The 400ft (120m) bridge, which was funded by Reading Borough Council, is made of 455 tonnes of steel and has a mast made in the Netherlands. The proposed names for the bridge Christchurch Bridge: Christchurch Meadow in Reading was named after Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford and owned by Reading businessman Joseph Fiddler. Get Reading Possible location for Third Thames (Road) Bridge revealed The potential location was revealed in the Third Thames Crossing Appraisal Specification Report, which was recently published by Reading East MP Rob Wilson An area on the outskirts of Reading has been earmarked as a potential location for the Third Thames Bridge. The possible site close to Thames Valley Park has been included in a report made public by Reading East MP Rob Wilson on Saturday, July 2. Hoping to give motorists better transparency over the plans for the long-anticipated bridge, Mr Wilson released the details published in the Third Thames Crossing Appraisal Specification Report. The document outlines proposals to build a bridge which links Thames Valley Park Drive to Henley Road by crossing over Caversham Lakes. ![]() A detailed traffic modelling assessment which collects information about journeys made over the Thames and how a new bridge could change this has been carried out. This found building the bridge in the proposed location could relieve congestion and cut journey times. However, the report also states: "Further detailed assessment of the bridge is now required to determine the extent of the benefits". Traffic modelling data collected in a vast area - which stretches from the M40 in the north to the M3 in the south, and the A34 in the west to the M25 in the east - is currently being analysed. The results will be used to predict the impact of the bridge, create projections of future traffic movements and build a Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC). However, Mr Wilson says a final location for the eagerly anticipated structure has not been chosen yet. The MP said: "The data collection work being led by Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) will provide key evidence for both my constituents and others across the modelled area, all of whom should be reassured by the scope of the work and the diligence with which it’s being completed. The broad area covered by the work is far greater than initially proposed and this further demonstrates the determination of stakeholders to make sure the data collected is as thorough and robust as possible. Prior to reading this document, I must emphasise to constituents that at this stage we are simply seeking the information to establish the likely impact of a Third Thames Bridge on potential flows and redistribution of traffic. We have not yet reached the point where a decision is to be taken on a final location for a bridge, nor on its specific features, at this stage we are merely obtaining the essential data to feed into a much wider process." The MP also said stakeholders opted to publish the report in a bid to ensure that all information about the bridge is in the public domain. This month Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership is hoping to submit a bid to the Department for Transport for additional funding, to ensure the project can go ahead. Stakeholders are now aiming to complete the SOBC by October. Mr Wilson added: "As ever, I will continue to keep my constituents fully up-to-date with further developments, but in the meantime hope that feedback from the stakeholder meeting, alongside the report, demonstrates the commitment of stakeholders to ensuring a comprehensive, evidence-based approach." The need for a cross-river bridge was first identified in the Cross Thames Travel Study Final Report, which was published in 2002. Edited by daib0, 6 Jul 2016, 08:13 AM.

Surely this can only be a good thing? The congestion at Reading & Caversham bridges has been horrendous for a long time now. |
