BBC News Berkshire Call to save 'Oscar Wilde jail' in Reading A plea has been made to save a Victorian prison which once held the Irish poet and writer Oscar Wilde. HMP Reading, now a young offenders institution, will close by the end of the year as part of government plans. The Oscar Wilde Society has called for the "iconic" building to be preserved, possibly as a tourist attraction. Reading council said it plans to retain the building and will ensure any future development should enhance the setting of the nearby Abbey Ruins. Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labour in prison for gross indecency, after his affair with Alfred Douglas was exposed in 1895. He was housed in cell number 3 on C3 landing in C block and after leaving prison he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol under the name C33. The poem took as its theme the last days of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, who was hanged for murder while Wilde was at the prison. Michael Seeney, deputy chairman of the Oscar Wilde Society, said: "We've been six or seven times. We hope such an iconic building could be saved in a form which is better than it is at the moment. It's next to the abbey, so it is a tourist spot in Reading. I'm just sorry we won't be able to go there again." Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said the closure was needed to bring down costs as part of modernisation. The government plans to replace 1,400 prison places in England and Wales with a £250m new super prison in Wrexham, which will hold more than 2,000 inmates. Reading East MP Rob Wilson has called on ministers to help save the 160 jobs at the jail which he admitted was "not fit for purpose" in its current form. He said staff had done "a fantastic job under difficult circumstances", but the institution now lacked outdoor space for physical exercise and should not be used for young people. The Prison Officers Association (POA) denied Reading was a "failing prison". Pete McParlin of the POA said the closure would be "forcing 320 prisoners from Reading into an already overcrowded prison estate" |

The Ballad of Reading Gaol Yet each man kills the thing he loves, by each let this be heard. Some do it with a bitter look, some with a flattering word. The coward does it with a kiss, the brave man with a sword. Some kill their love when they are young, and some when they are old. Some strangle with the hands of lust, some with the hands of gold. The kindest use a knife, because the dead so soon grow cold. |

Newbury & Thatcham Chronicle Reading Prison to close JAIL bosses have called time on Reading Prison's 170 year history. Prisons Minister Jeremy Wright is due to tell Parliament today that the iconic institution, which first opened in 1844 and has been used to house young offenders since 1992, will close because it is too cramped. The real estate value of the site will also have proved attractive to the Government because it would be ripe for redevelopment. The jail has enjoyed a colourful history including hosting its most famous inmate Oscar Wilde, who was sent down to two years hard labour in 1895 after being found guilty of "homosexual offences". Reading East MP Rob Wilson said: “Reading Prison has been an important part of our town’s history. It has been part of local life in Reading since 1844, and has had some well-known inmates, including Oscar Wilde. In recent years it has been a youth offenders institute and has been cramped and not fit for purpose. Staff have done a fantastic job in difficult circumstances, so my first thoughts are for them. I will be demanding a meeting with the Minister to ensure staff have every opportunity to be redeployed or are supported to find suitable alternative employment. Nonetheless, the decision offers an opportunity to do something new and positive with the land. The important thing now is that we have a proper consultation of local people so they can have their say on what is the best use we can make of the site, while deciding at the same time whether all or part of the heritage of the prison is worth preserving. It is important that local people have their say on the future of this landmark site. I would encourage anyone who has ideas to contact me so that we ensure that the Ministry of Justice does the right thing with the land.” |

In Reading Gaol, near Reading Town There lies a pit of shame. Did they have transfer windows in the 19th century then?

Not all families of prisoners are not to blame, once again the poor are attacked through no fault of their own in expensive traveling expenses due to the Tory privatization ideology, most of them have interests in these private firms.Scum the lot of them, next it will be schools and hospitals,oh,they already have. Read that some elderly people robbed and worse in their homes are now to scared and nervous to venture out, their lives are ruined , bur we have to feel sorry for some chav of a mother because she cant afford to visit her "Little soldier" who done the crime, Even aged 71 I still feel responsible for my kids and the youngest is 28 , Set them off right and they turn out right. I would load them on a big ship and float them in the channel.
